Charter bus crash north of Dallas kills 13

SHERMAN, Texas (AP) — A charter bus carrying Vietnamese worshippers on a pilgrimage ran off a highway overpass north of Dallas and plunged onto a roadway below early Friday, killing at least 13 people and sending at least 40 to hospitals.
The bus ran off U.S. 75 about 12:45 a.m. and skidded across a guard rail before falling 15 feet and landing on its side. The bus carrying 55 people from Houston to Missouri may have blown a tire, but officials were still investigating the crumpled wreckage littered with luggage, shopping bags and scattered clothing.
"There were people deceased from the front of the bus to the back of the bus," Officer Zachary Flores, one of the first on the scene, told The Dallas Morning News.
The bus came to rest on its right side in the northbound lane of an access road. Workers righted the wreckage and loaded it onto a flatbed truck.
Police said 12 people died at the scene and another died at a Dallas hospital. At least six more were hospitalized in critical condition.
"I saw crushing wounds," said Fire Chief Jeff Jones, "but there were very few walking wounded."

911 callers describe scene of deadly bus crash
SHERMAN, Texas — Witnesses who called 911 after a deadly charter bus crash in Texas that killed at least 16 people described a chaotic scene, telling emergency personnel of bloody passengers crushed beneath the smoking wreck of the bus, according to calls released Saturday by police.
The unlicensed bus carrying 55 members of a Vietnamese Catholic group from Houston to Carthage, Mo., for an annual religious festival smashed into a guardrail and skidded off a highway early Friday morning near the Texas-Oklahoma border. Twelve people died at the scene and four more have died at area hospitals.
One emergency call begins with a female crash victim speaking in accented English over the screams and moans of other passengers. After struggling to answer the 911 operator's questions, she hands the phone to a man, who apparently arrived at the scene immediately after the crash.
"We've got people crushed underneath the bus," the man said. "The bus is smoking. It might catch fire."

They need to regulate these buses much more then what they do.. They need to enforce these laws in the same manner as they do the trucking industry.. To many dangerous buses on the road... I have seen many buses with very questionable tires, I could imagine what the rest of the braking system looked like...

Retreads are legal on buses as they are on trucks. However, they are never to be on the steer axles.

The bus was unlicensed, the driver had lapsed medical certification and DUI history.

It reminds me of the bus that struck a house in our small town. It was a tour bus with spanish speaking passengers going to a local tourism spot. The bus had faulty brakes and other problems.

The state began DOT'ing the buses at the parking area and found many out of service. 4 years later, we never hear about them doing it anymore and the buses are still running many per day.
