Truck carrying 40 horses flips in Calgary

CALGARY — Twelve horses were killed or had to be euthanized after a semi truck flipped and went off a freeway Friday morning in Calgary.
The trailer was carrying 44 horses when it tipped on its side in the centre median.
Emergency crews, staff from the Spruce Meadows horse jumping facility, and other drivers helped free the trapped horses and round the others up.
Each horse either walked out on its own or had to be dragged out using ropes and manual labour, Jeff Budai of the Calgary Fire Department said in news release. He said it took three hours to free the horses. Once out of the tipped truck, the horses were loaded back on a trailer and taken for assessment and treatment.

Eight horses had to be put down at the scene and four others were taken to Okotoks to be euthanized.
The trailer was separated into three chambers and crews had to open each separately. Firefighters used a plasma cutter to remove the rear portions of the truck and reciprocating saws to cut holes in the side.
The semi driver says he’s not sure how the truck flipped. He was not hurt.
