Deer Jump From Overpass, Hit Truck

Five Deer Die Jumping Onto Indiana Highway

Saturday, November 29, 2008
MARKLE, Ind. -- Police in Indiana said five deer that wandered onto a highway overpass have jumped to their deaths on Interstate 69, one of them crashing through a tractor-trailer's windshield. Indiana Department of Natural Resources spokesman John Salb said the deer may have been spooked by cars as they were crossing the overpass Friday. They fell 20 to 30 feet onto the highway. Police said the driver of the tractor-trailer rig struck by one of the deer was not injured. A DNR spokesman said late fall is stressful for deer because it is hunting season. Farmers are also removing the last of their crops from the fields, reducing the animals' food supply as the animals' breeding season is in full swing.

Home Mass suicide pact -- NOT ‼

I disagree. You have to look at the deer's mind frame, to find a motive to their behavior. I think one deer jumped, and one after another, the others followed. If all the deers had jumped simultaneously, then at least 2 deers should've landed on the semi. One deer would have hit the windshield, and the 2nd one on the trailer's roof. Its likely only one deer panicked, and jumped when someone blew their horn as they were going under the overpass bridge. Deers are social oriented herbivores; a group will follow one alpha leader. When the others saw their leader jump, they automatically followed right behind him.

the second deer needs to wait till the first one makes it over the rail, or it stands the chance of being rejected by the first ones hind end......if you study deer closely they tend to follow each other some times.....one after the other.......you've seen when the impalas try to get past the crocks in africa their pinging off each other/ colliding and so forth....

next time the trucker should be fined for disturbing wildlife......people should be required to pull out of natures way, kinda like for a ambulance .......isn't that why they have deer crossing signs for the drivers to be cautious...but understandable truckers have time restraints so i imagine deer bowling will continue on for a long time........RIP Herd
