Up to 50 vehicles pile up on foggy California. pass

Quote:
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — As many as 50 vehicles were involved in a chain-reaction accident early Wednesday in fog on a mountain highway, injuring at least 15 people and scattering wreckage for a half-mile, authorities said.

The chain-reaction collision began when two tractor-trailer rigs crashed in northbound lanes, officers said.

Motorist Phil Cokkinos told KTTV's "Good Day LA" program by phone that he saw three separate multi-vehicle accidents as he zigzagged along Interstate 15 near the summit of Cajon Pass. The last crash was the largest, he said.

"There was like three, four big-rigs, a couple cars accordioned in between them. In all between the three accidents, 50 cars-plus," he said.

I drove south down I-15 right after this wreck happened. That was some pretty thick fog right at the summit. The real bad part only lasted for a mile or so though right at the top. Would have been a lot worse had it happened on the downhill side.

would be interesting to know the cause. Who ran into who.
That is a pretty good climb out San Bernadino. Slow trucks always present. Just wondering if a fast moving car was in the truck lane, and came upon a slow moving truck.

sad to say i'd assumed it was a fast truck that rear-ended a slow car.

luckily i've been in a white-out only once, but i only got passed by other trucks.
