Let go after accident. My rights?

I was let go after a rollover accident in Alabama. I was an independent contractor. The company said I paid for insurance that covered the truck, trailer, and freight, but not my personal property. I am a resident of CA. Do I have any chance of recovering some type of lost of my personal property? Thank you.

Probably not. You were a lease-op, yes? The company insured their property, so that is covered. For the situation of personal property it's like renting an apartment - if the apartment burns down you don't have any coverage for your property unless you bought a personal property policy.

Should be covered under your homeowners policy. However, do not tell them it was a business computer or anything like that. Only personal items.

Where the accident occurs (or jurisdiction) is more important that where you reside. California is very consumer protection oriented and I can appreciate your wanting to utilize their laws for this loss, unfortunately, it is my belief that Alabama law would prevail. As the previous posters have suggested, your homeowners or renters insurance would have potential coverage dependent upon your policy and deductible. You may also wish to review your employment contract that you executed with your now former employer to determine if it addresses personal property (I am pretty confident that it will contain a hold harmless/indemnification language which will preclude you from direct action against said employer). Hope this was helpful from a claims professional's perspective!
