| Trucker, construction workers hurt in I-80 crash A semi driver and four construction workers were hurt Monday when the big rig slammed into a construction zone. The accident occurred about 11:15 a.m. on Interstate 80 westbound near mile marker 230 in Johnson County. The Iowa State Patrol said the semi was driven by Gary Lee Green, 45, of Florence, Ky. He was flown by University Hospitals air care to the hospital. The construction workers were identified as Dean Herberger, 55, of Indianola; Jack Herberger, 25, of Indianola; Manuel de Jesus, 32, of Des Moines; and Lawrence Isaac Schropp, 53, of Parnell. All four were taken by ambulance to University Hospitals in Iowa City. Troopers said the semi-tractor trailer was westbound on I-80 when it struck a cement barrier in the construction zone at the 230 mile marker. The semi entered the work zone and struck construction equipment. The debris from the collision injured the construction workers, troopers said. The accident remains under investigation.

| Drivers need to learn to slow down in these construction zones!! I just drove through there this morning. Count 'em. Eleven trucks, all of which I had recently passed on the open portion of the highway (70 mph), went around me, in a pouring rain that made visibility terrible, in the left lane like I was in their way. I won't mention any companies, but the names are hypenated. Well, most of them were. I almost had my hood taken off by one of them. I could not have fit my hand between his trailer, and my mirror at one point. Of course, there was no response on the cb. And, we wonder why truckers get such a bad rap. The few represent the many. You know who you are. |
