Semi tanker explodes on Indianapolis highway ramp

Quote:
A liquid propane tanker exploded on an Indianapolis highway ramp on Thursday, shooting a fireball of flames and black smoke into the sky and closing a section of one of the city's major expressways for what could be weeks. The tanker's driver was taken to a hospital with injuries that didn't appear to be life threatening, said Lawrence Township Fire Marshal Dick Groves. The driver of a vehicle that was behind the truck when it exploded was taken to a hospital with severe burns.
"We seen a big massive fireball like you wouldn't believe," Lonnie Hood, who was working nearby the highway ramp, told WTHR-TV. "It was a massive explosion. It just roared in my chest. It was unreal."
He said he and another man helped pull the driver out of the burning tanker.
"Me and another guy pulled him out of there and just drug him down the road here and his whole truck blew up," Hood said.
Other witnesses said they had to put their cars in reverse to escape the flames, which charred billboards and a cellular phone tower.
I heard on the cb that the driver didn't make it. Glad that rumor wasn't true.

Any kind of a tanker is and can be deadly. When they go they usually burn to the ground. I am glad the driver got out.

Authorities aren't sure why, but a liquid propane tanker from PTI Trucking missed the curve on the ramp from I-69 to 465. The crash enveloped the I-465 overpass in 150-foot columns of fire on either side.

I saw the flash of the explosion and subsequent mushroom cloud as I was pulling out of the parking lot for another run. I work out of the southeast side of town and was able to see it from that far away. Crazy.

I took that ramp about an hour earlier, too. It's a good thing I was ahead of schedule or I might have got caught up in it.

The NE corner of Indy I465 & I69 has now just become interesting. Officials are saying the ramp that goes West bound I465 will be closed for weeks.

Tanker crashes closes portion of busy interstate at Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS – Interstate 465 near I-69/Binford Boulevard on the city’s northeast side remains closed pending emergency bridge inspections and testing of steel bridge beams, the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) said this morning.

At about 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, first responders cleared the scene of an earlier propane tanker explosion, allowing inspections to begin for the two bridges that carry eastbound and westbound I-465 over an I-69 southbound exit ramp and an adjacent rail line.

More than a dozen engineers and inspectors from INDOT, the Federal Highway Administration, Purdue University School of Civil Engineering and private bridge contractors are participating in ongoing inspections this evening.

INDOT’s top priority in responding to this morning’s tanker crash is reopening I-465 and adjacent I-69 ramps as soon as bridge inspectors and structural engineers determine it is safe for traffic to travel over or under the bridges.

Just went through that area about three hours ago. I-69 to west bound 465 is open. 465 northbound to I-69 is open. 465 is closed right after the I-69 exit. Took Binford Blvd to 56th street to bypass 465 west bound. Took an extra 20 mintues but it was better than going west bound on 465.

I live an hour from Indy and on the way home today I-465 Eastbound is now open and Westbound will remain closed for an unknown amount of time according to Q95 local radio station.
