I just watched the local news, and they claim this is worse than the '97 slide. They say that one was mostly dirt with rock, while this one is all rock, and will be much harder to clean up. It's hard telling how long I-40 will be closed this time.

Just watched a bit of the local news this morning, as I'm in Inman, SC right now....the word they're using is "months".

I was headed to Knoxville to relay a load to Nashville...someone will have to come get it here now as I only have a handful of hours to run today...been busy the last five days, so I can't do the detour with what I've got left.

Glad the driver of the JCT truck was OK (at least that's what I heard).....

If you're light lol. There's a few hills between Asheville and 81. Some might argue a little better scenery than the gorge though so it's not all bad.

If you're not scared of twisty two-lanes, 81 out of Erwin to 107 through Greeneville is a scenic tour. It's actually not a bad drive, I run that road quite frequently... about 30 miles longer than I-40.

Be forewarned, the first section on 81 (Erwin) is narrow and very twisty, but fun!

One of the articles I read last night on this said the detour was more like 140 to 160 miles farther to run the official detour.

It is 116 miles from Asheville, NC to Knoxville, TN taking I-40. It's 146 miles to go via 107. It's 166 miles to run all the way up I-26 to I-81... apparently whoever came up with the "official detour" was hitting the glass pipe.

26 to 81 was the plan. Without looking at a map I was sure there had to be a better way.

I guess I'll be taking the scenic route today. Heading for Statesville out of Little Rock.

Thanks GA for the thread.

Gee you'd think they would have built some sort of retaining wall after the first rock slide.
