A crash Thursday evening near Stroudsburg left at least one person dead and closed a stretch of Route 209.
Officials on the scene said the wreck happened around 8 p.m. on Route 209 near the intersection with Shafers School House Road in Stroud Township.
A tractor trailer and four other vehicles were involved.
An officer with the Stroud Area Regional Police told Newswatch 16 that the four vehicles were stopped at a red light and, for some reason, the tractor trailer plowed into the rear of the line.
According to the Stroud Township fire chief, a woman in one of the vehicles was killed. Her name has not been released.
Two other people were flown to the hospital by helicopter.
The driver of the rig suffered minor injuries.
Route 209 is closed between Interstate 80 and Route 33 in the Stroudsburg area while authorities clear the scene and investigate what led to the deadly crash in Monroe County. Police expect the road to be closed until sometime Friday morning.

have had a heart attack, stroke, many other medical reasons. -
I looked at both displays and did not see any names on the trailer. If it was one of the usual suspects, you would have seen the name or logo prominent on the trailer.
Must've been a small company or independent. Can't blame this one on Swift, Werner, JB Hunt, et al. -

"I have 34 years of driving experience and I've never caused an accident,"
So it's not just the newbies either.
I'm not completely heartless. S*** happens to the best of us. We'll have to see what comes out in the wash on this one. Doesn't say anything about whether he was talking on the phone when it happened, but I'm sure they know this information by now. -
The truck driver was seen driving erratically before the accident and at least one witness was in the process of calling 911 to report him at the time he made the turn and plowed into the vehicles. He attempted suicide by trying to run back into his burning truck. Toxicology reports are pending, but he denies using any drugs.

Erratic driving is very often caused by trying to text or use the QC while driving. Maybe he was dialing a phone number on his cel. Or changing the radio dial. He may have been swatting at a fly. A bee or wasp might have gotten into his cab. If he's a smoker, he might have dropped the cigarette on the floor...or in a more sensitive place than that.
A lot of things could have been going on inside that truck. Unless and until this driver owns up to what was going on, we will not know.
