i:biggrin_25513:You guys are missing the point, the trainee had his flashes on so that right there tells who ever is behind him that they need to move over, its sad about one of our own to die, but why and how did he not see that crst truck in time is beyond me, so in my opinion all 3 drivers are at fault. This is just sad either way.....

Perhaps, and I'm sorry to say (being former law enforcement) that SOME cops like to "pad" the press release to look like they know more abotu an incident than they do. I've seen it much more recently with all the social media available, along with 24 hr cable news - everybody wants every detail, and if the state trooper spokesman didn't have much info, they would look dumb... can't have that, so let's fill in the blanks before going on the microphone.

Really stupid practice, has led to lots of misconceptions and even tainted jury pools.

Have any of you never dropped something or changed the radio station or reached for your cigs , look up and WHOA!!!! where did that guy come from??? The guy could have been doing one of these things or been half asleep. Whether any of you will admit to it or not, I bet it has happened to you. One thing about it though, investigation or not ,we'll never know. Prayers to his family.

Well first off before we all jump on the "Blame only one person bandwagon",and my condolences to the dead drivers family with all respect,we all say a prayer when we see this happen, then shake our head (albeit in disgust, shock,or disbelief) and then move on down the road and hope "Nothing like that ever happens to me"

So now i have a few questions as to the other "possible causes" of this

It was 5:40am and they were heading eastbound, okay i havent been out on that part of 80 in a while but at time in the morning is the sun coming up?
1.Is that part of 80(mm335) a uphill grade or downhill?
2.Is at the 336 mm a uphill grade and the 335 on the other side of it a downhill?(I.E. FCC caught him at the crest or just beyond)
3.Was there a vehicle beside FCC at the time(why didnt he just pass CRST)?

After chewing on this for a awhile and with not all the "FACTS" in place other than a news report lets step back and just look at it as a accident, maybe one that should not have happen at all for many reasons, and Ill throw out a few
1.Training at CRST practices: Is this acceptable in their system?(I had to "re-train" a former CRST student with 3+ months of experiance when he hired on at CFI,I was intrigued and shocked as he explained CRST's training program,(and that was 2009) so things are the same still
2.FCC truck: well there is no data in this article as to his "status" so we will probably never really know if he was Compliant but I have to give him the "Benefit of Doubt" as all facts are not present as to his disposition

In summary, and well "What-if's" as we like to say when we see this happen,
"What if"; the trainer was up and in the proper seat would this had happen? probably not
"What-If"; the FCC truck was well alerted to the situation he found himself in(we will never know sadly) so we have to assume he was an upstanding driver in full compliance and experiance, and if so why did this happen?

We all sort of roll our collective eyes when the smith system is brought up but???
    The Five Keys are:
    1. Aim High in Steering - Avoid Collisions by seeing, evaluating, and acting upon all information available.
    2. Get the Big Picture - Fewer mistakes are made when you have the complete traffic picture.
    3. Keep Your Eyes Moving - Proper scanning techniques separate safe drivers from people who make costly errors.
    4. Leave Yourself an Out - All that separates drivers from a collision is space. Use it to your advantage.
    5. Make Sure They See You - Seek eye contact and use your warning devices at the same time

My point is this,Re-read the article AFTER you Re-read the 5 keys to the "Smith System" Ill bet you have a lil more doubt as to why this occurred.

I passed this just as the first responder was getting there. It was still dark at this time of morning.

I admit some of this is still hazy as I just have the image of that wreck in my mind as I passed it and just knowing somebody had died in that truck without having to be told and literally feeling the heat of the fire burning on my arms and legs as I went by.

But as I remember it, that part of I80 is a very slight incline, not enough of an incline to make you lose any speed even if fully loaded, but just enough that I know that I couldn't see the truck fire as I approached it but could see the lights of the first responder and the hazards flashing in the left lane of the other truck that had witnessed it and pulled over.

My uneducated theory is that FCC did not see CRST until he crested that slight incline and all of a sudden CRST was right there and there wasn't anything he could do.

Then just shut the forum down because that's about all that goes on around here. Just a bunch of discussions about this and that.
