DODGE CITY, Kansas -- A 48-year-old Liberal woman is dead following an accident Thursday afternoon south of Dodge City.
A Ford Escape driven by Alma Varela was southbound on McArtor Road when she failed and was struck by a semi on U.S. Highway 56.
Her passenger 48-year-old Alfredo Varela died at the scene.
The driver of semi, 36-year-old John Hirschler, was taken to Western Plains Regional Medical center.
Another semi tried to avoid the collision and ran off the roadway into a ditch.
He wasn't seriously injured.
