Thread: Cattle Truck Overturned in DFW
- 05.29.2012 #11
The curve where this accident happened, trucks have been rolling over there on a regular basis since the highway was built. I-35E (Then just I-35) was built through an existing city. Just like all urban freeways cut through existing cities, they have some pretty nasty curves in them. I-20 in Birmingham Al has a 90 degree turn in it where they had to avoid a cemetery that contains plots from the 1800's. But like all curves in interstates these are well marked in advance, people just don't pay attention or disregard the safe speed all together.

There are gates, that keep them in place, so that they all cannot be piled up in one corner or something. But they will shift from side to side, and cause the pot to rock. When hubby started hauling cattle, the old timers told him it wasn't if he would lay one over it was when. LOL Now he never did, but I suspect that if your intoxicated, your not going to react quickly to pull that pot back on track, if they did shift. I know my hubby said that while hauling cattle, your acceleration can "make of break" weather you lay it down or not.

I don't usually gate cattle in the centers unless I have sorted cattle that can't be mixed or have a light load. I keep compartments full to keep them from wandering around on the trailer. One place I haul from, I have to use every gate in the trailer to keep cattle from piling up going up a steep hill. I have to have a tractor pull me up the hill with a log chain it's so steep. When hauling calves the trailer can get top heavy because in order to get 55,000lbs on I have to double deck the nose and stuff the doghouse full. She can get a little top heavy when I have cattle stacked into the rafters.
