(Swift) Semi fire snarls traffic on I-17 (Arizona) Semi fire snarls traffic on I-17
Posted: Aug 17, 2012 5:40 PMUpdated: Aug 17, 2012 5:46 PMBy Breann Bierman - email
PHOENIX (CBS5) -A semi trailer loaded with produce became engulfed in flames on I-17 and caused quite a backup for travelers Friday afternoon.
DPS said the commercial tractor trailer was heading northbound at Cordes Junction when it started on fire.
All roads were closed as crews extinguished the fire. One lane reopened about 5:30 p.m.
The CBS 5 News helicopter captured some vehicles off-roading to avoid the traffic backup. Some of those vehicles ended up stuck.
DPS said there were no injuries from the fire.

7 out of 10 times those are inverters gone bad, or overloaded inverters that failed to shutdown.

Exactly what came to mind; inverters. Most companies outlaw them for this sole reason. If I'm not mistaken, Swift does too. Whoever this driver is, his career went up in flames with the truck.

generally you aren't using the invertor while driving.
least mine don't get used. course, i'm solo and not team
asnd there's all kindsa wiring that can burn out. 8 years ago we had a pete dumptruck catch fire under the hood. it got a whole new wiring harness. no inverter installed.

That was one of those fast Swift trucks. He was burning rubber to get away from the Phoenix terminal with a hot load

Most companies outlaw inverters? News to me!
Actually inverter fires aren't common on moving trucks.
Tire fires, wheel seal failure and brake overheating, with the new breed of drivers that won't even own a CB, let alone monitor it for drivers screaming on the air, "You're on FIRE SWIFT!!!"
You'd be suprized how fast they burn down to the frame.

A team (or passenger) is running on inverter almost 24/7. Charging a cell phone or laptop with an ac charger? Using an inverter. If anything in that truck is sipping an AC current, an inverter is running somewhere. Many drivers run AC fridges that require constant, heavy inverter use.

Not trying to be a smarty pants, however...
http://www.nfpa.org/assets/files/pdf/osvehicle.pdf
Page 47 sites more than 60% attributed to tire, wheel, running gear.
Not saying impossible for an inverter fire (improperly installed, badly grounded, connection on wire not rated high enough for the load), but tires, brakes and associated parts of axle to wheel connection is more common than not on a rolling truck.
