LITCHFIELD, IL (KTVI) - Illinois State Police say a trooper was struck and killed in an accident on northbound Interstate 55 near Litchfield, IL Monday morning. He has been identified Trooper Kyle Deatherage, 32.
Deatherage was conducting a traffic stop just after 9 a.m., when he was struck by a semi tractor-trailer on I-55 at milepost 62. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

What a horrible accident. On the Evan Lockridge show today it was said that the truck driver tried to move over but traffic would not cooperate. Just as the truck approached, the Trooper stepped back and was struck by the truck.

My prayers to the Troopers family and friends and to the truck driver.

Bad deal. People on the side of the road become so engrossed in what they are doing, they can forget they are on the side of the road right next to speeding traffic. The end of a life and the end of a career in the blink of an eye. Tragic.

When are people going to learn to slow down and get over when they see a vehicle on the shoulder. The guy who killed that trooper should go to jail for a long time. What an idiot

Really ignorant comment by Pete. Making such a assumption without even reading the whole article. Wonder if you could pull your semi to a screeching halt or maybe you'd just run over the four wheelers next to you if a trooper stepped out into the highway in front of you. My prayers go out to both the troopers family the trucker and his as Im sure he is not having a good day today or probably wont for months to come... God Bless

They need to add a law that requires any traffic in the inside lane(s) who are adjacent to a vehicle in the outside lane to slow and allow a space for affected vehicles to move over the instant a stopped vehicle with emergency lights is seen. You see this so often when traffic simply REFUSES to slow and create a merge space KNOWING and SEEING the situation they are speeding towards.

The penalties for these inconsiderate, unsafe morons should be the same as the penalties for those who don't move over or slow down when they could easily move over.

Having said that I realize, sweeping curves can block the view of the situation ahead but drivers need to understand that when I driver turns on his left turn signal ... he/she NEEDS OVER NOW and they shouldn't question the request.

Slow down? So it's ok to hit a cop at 35, so long as you're not doing 65? Do you think in most cases slowing down would have averted these sorts of incidents? Yes, they should slow down, but that is really not going to help much. If a human body is in the traffic lane, that body is going to be hit and killed when a vehicle passes through that same space, regardless of speed. They need to be allowed to move over, and move over ASAP
