Cleanup and repairs from a fiery fatal truck accident closed U.S. 290 for more than 17 hours Tuesday.
After initially hoping to have spilled diesel fuel cleaned up and the road reopened by noon, Texas Department of Transportation and police officials cleared the lanes about 6 p.m.
A trucker died and his passenger was injured in the 12:30 a.m. big-rig crash that snarled traffic near Barker-Cypress, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office. Traffic was especially bad during the morning commute.
Deputies said the driver failed to stay in a single lane and struck a guard rail. The tractor-trailer rolled onto its side and burst into flames. The driver, whose name has not been released, was unable to get out and died at the scene.
A passenger who was in the sleeping compartment was thrown from the truck. The person, whose name has not been released, was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital. Details of the passenger's injuries and condition were not released.
During the crash, fuel spilled onto the roadway. The cargo of apples tumbled from the charred, mangled tractor-trailer.
The crash forced officials to shut down inbound lanes while crews cleared the scene. Traffic was jammed for miles.
In addition to cleaning up the spilled fuel and loading the cargo that tumbled from the trailer onto other trucks, some minor repairs to the freeway were required, TxDOT spokeswoman Karen Othon said.
Othon said the minor repairs to the road required crews to bring in large trash containers, which were removed shortly before the lanes reopened.
