Probably better stories on this incident out there but I'm tired and going to retire ...

Seems some of these tour managers need to focus a little more on quality/safety mindedness in the selection of truck drivers rather then hiring "within the family" as I suspect a lot of these bands do. But it's a conflict ... they want a young kid who can "keep up" and support the image of the band, but they need an older, experienced driver who can slow down and do the job right. But it's hard to imagine an older gentleman driving for Motley Crew. Yes the band is "old" but they can't have "old" guys driving and presenting that image on the transportation side.

My company pulls concert tours, and I can tell you that the hiring criteria isn't much different than freight haulers. And some of the drivers for these tours are even more wacked out of their minds than the musicians are. They actually think they are rock stars.

Can we get some information on the incident before you start making accusations? The trucks drivers where probably from Upstaging, Stage Call or one of the others, the tour managers HIRE the company and the company sends the drivers out. Please know what you're talking about before posting.

Sometimes drivers are asked for by the clients and it's usually because they have been with them before, know the kind of job they did for them and they get the job done. Why would they want older drivers, probably because those guys have been in and out of the arenas they are playing many, many times, know how to get the trucks in and out. It costs a bad money when a driver can't get their truck in and out of a dock when there are 10 guys standing there at $25 an hour waiting for someone to get in the dock.

It's NOT the driver's job to uphold the image of the band, it's their job to haul the band's gear.

Again, PLEASE know what you are talking about before you post.

Those drivers usually don't last too long on a tour.

    See this thread. http://www.thetruckersreport.com/tr...anyone-driven-for-entertainment-industry.html

This is my point. They don't seem to be able to do this one basic task (haul the band's gear). This is yet another major incident in only a few years for this band. It doesn't matter if it's an outside hauler or not. It carriers Crue gear so it's a Crue entity as far as public perception goes ... maybe the tour manager needs to do a better job of selecting haulers.

I don't know that this was a "kid" involved but I'll bet there was less the 2 years verifiable, quality experience at the wheel of that crashed truck. If I'm proven wrong I will apologize.

You don't even know why the truck jackknifed yet it's the tour manager's fault??????? For all the entertainment gear that moves on the roads, the accident rate is VERY low.

Again PLEASE know what you're talking about, because right now, you DON'T......

And will SHO-TYME apologize if the driver is a relative rookie with < 2 years experience? Especially if also a youngster? Say, 25-30.

I'd rather hear about a driver's entertainment trucking experience than another argument.

It doesn't matter about what band it is. Because of where I work, I have an insight to this. The band, the manager, etc, they don't hire the driver. The company does. Xtreme/Lessors, Stage Call, Janco, etc, they hire the drivers. They own the trucks, the trailers, hold the insurance, pay for the fuel, etc. They get paid for the day and if they drive over a certain amount of miles per day, they get "overdrive" pay. They get paid to sleep in their trucks and on some days they have catered meals. It's whatever the entertainment company/band/comedian (we do/did Larry the Canle Guy) sets up in the contract. The contract also states how many trucks, trailers and drivers they need. It's really not hard work. The entertainer/company can request a certain driver, but there are no guarantees and that driver MUST be employed by the transportation company, not the band or management.

It's a tough life too. They get loaded at night and a lot of drivers I knew, maybe not now but in the 80s, helped load then drove all night after a concert that ended at 11, loaded, ate and then took off for the next gig. I could've done it but refused to because they always ran all night, had to be there the next day to unload and then slept in the afternoon and evening while the concert was on. Not a good way to live.
