Walking in a truck stop parking lot or even at a rest area you have got to remember what your mother taught you about crossing the street. Look both ways and look again. The only person responsible for your safety is YOU. Look, stop and wait, observe what is going on around you. When I cross the fuel lanes I look in the seat of every truck. Is it empty or not. I make eye contact with that driver before I step in front of his truck. If there is an open fuel lane I stop and look to make sure there is no one barreling through it. Unfortunate accident. My heart goes out to the husband.

Very true. I know that on more than one occasion where I was doing a pull through the fuel aisle I would have sent somebody to an early grave had I not been diligent and stopped at the pump and make sure it was clear before continuing

    blairandgretchen Thanks this.

It seems like here of late, no one pays attention. The pedestrian or the driver. Either way, I really concentrate on going slow and being diligent in my looking out for people. I also am just as diligent when walking across the lot... My heart goes out to that driver though.. I'm also not going to lie.. If someone hit my wife.. They would need two body bags..

I have a friend who witnessed a woman being run over on the fuel island at the Pilot in Birmingham..
    also
several years ago a woman was run over at the Fly J in Resaca,Ga..

Why have so many women been hit?

A lot of women are not that tall. And when they walk close to the front of the truck, its easy not to see them. And some of these truckers with that "I'm a big dang hurry mentality" don t care for anyone or themselves, and don t care about anyone or anything in their path

Aren't most of the pedestrian fatalities in truck stops with people in the open? I would hope that anyone driving in a lot wouldn't hit a stationary object. I walk as close to obstructions as possible, giving extra care to trucks in parking spaces that are getting ready to pull out and can't see in front of them.

There is something to be said for safety vests, and not turning your back in any direction for more than one second without looking that way (not to blame the pedestrian, it's like Maximum Overdrive in those places or Death Race 2000, take your pick, and try to watch out for others while you're at it).
