    :biggrin_25510:
We just had our first good rain in months and the roads were slick out there today.
I was running around the Portland area all day long dodging idiots right and left, the news radio station had the accident count in the metro area at 11 wrecks by 6:00 this morn and I hadn't even left the yard yet so I knew it was going to be one of those days.
I made it though the day without any real close calls, just your typical idiot lane jockeys cutting me off like they have a death wish or something but I was extra careful all day staying on top of my game.
All I had left to do was just stop by the Troutdale terminal to do a drop and hook for a preload to take back to the Kalama yard I drive from and go home. (30 miles North of Portland)
I was just about a mile from the Troutdale yard when some idiot in a small pickup truck spun out and t-boned me right in the driver's side drive tires.
    :biggrin_2555:
I was looking in my right mirror to move over to make a lane change for my upcoming exit when ..... whammy! My world got rocked!
Fortunately I didn't jackknife and got her under control and pulled over onto the shoulder.
I didn't even know that I'd been hit yet, wasn't sure what happened, I just thought something blew up on the truck until I looked back in my left mirror and saw the mangled up little pickup truck.
The guy was lucky he didn't get hurt, airbag did it's job and he bounced off my tires rather than going under them.
My truck didn't sustain any real damage, just a few paint marks from his pickup but his little truck was a total loss.
The guys at the shop in Troutdale checked the truck over real well and sent my on my way home empty and I was glad to call it a day.

What were you doing in the L lane (of presumably 2) ~a mile from your exit (/slash/ "yard")...?

A "small pickup" bouncing off your drive tires had you struggling to maintain control...?

What would it matter if he were in left lane? That probably wouldn't have changed the outcome.

Maybe, maybe not, but it's pretty hard to drive into the R side drives from the L lane. My perspective on truck crashes is grounded in what the truck driver could have done to prevent the crash, and what may be learned from a crash.

It seems reasonable to assume the small pickup was "passing" and not being overtaken, and the road in question I-84.

That portion of 84 is flat, and the OR truck speed limit 55, which would make a need for a truck to pass slower traffic a pretty rare occurrence, especially, let's say ~5 miles from the intended exit.

Now that you put it that way it now has me question if the OP is the one to hit the pickup instead of the other way around.

Ok guys, here's the dealeo, the pickup hit me plain and simple and I was in the lane I needed to be in.
The driver even apologized for hitting me despite being pretty shaken up.
We both had just turned onto the frontage road after going under the I-84 overpass just past the Loves truckstop in Troutdale.
There are two left turn lanes going onto the frontage road by the airport and then after the turn a third lane on the right that is an exit lane for Marine Drive which I had to take to get to the yard.
The pickup was going too fast and lost control, he spun out and then shot straight into my drives which rocked the truck hard and set the frontend to shaking.
Fortunately I wasn't going very fast and was able to get stopped pretty quick.
He flew around the turn and lost it, went clear into the grass on the left side then overcorrected and shot back onto the pavement at a 90 degree angle to the flow of traffic crossing the left lane and t-boning me straight into my rear drive tire.

Right. Two L turn lanes, you should have been in the rightmost L turn lane, which empties onto the frontage road as the center lane of three, the rightmost lane being "exit only" onto NW Marine, your intended route.

So the pickup attempted to pass on the R using that lane, spun, etc.

Man, that was some really crappy "driving" on his part.

Describing the circumstances of a crash is not as easy as it looks on TV.
