The poor guy just killed 4 college students. He wakes up in a hospital and realizes the gravity of the situation. He is going to give an explaination, any explaination to justify the what is likely unforgivable. He will change his story several times until the truth is determined. And he is living a hell on earth for the rest of his life. No winners here.

There is a lesson here, we all know what it is.

The toxicology report will be the important piece of the forensic puzzle. Having a pipe with marijuana reside in the truck...

    ....Wow, just wow.

No doubt, I recall back in 80 & 81 both marijuana & cocaine was becoming popular with some truck drivers.

The 1st & only time I saw any cocaine.

One night at the old Texaco Truck Stop East of Tuscon I wound up in a place I did not like at all. I was going west & went in & set down with some drivers out of Dallas going east in the corner booth. I was in the middle & one driver pulled out a golden straw & some cocaine, least that's what he said it was, He & 2 more snorted some right there on the table. I was stunned.

I quickly said let me out, I've got to get on the road for LA. I did not want to be around them, that can cause to much trouble.

My next trip west I met one of the drivers going through Tuscon, he was saying over the cb radio he had a bad headache & his marijuana would not stop it. I did not talk to him but I figure his headache was from to much cocaine.

I heard later he wrecked killing himself. Some just can't stay away from that stuff, & for many of them it ends their life.

    FTA:
"NTSB determined the crash most likely resulted from the trucker’s use of synthetic cannabinoids known as K2. Staley was driving despite a history of drug use. The investigation showed he failed to take corrective action when the truck left the highway and that he never slowed down, traveling at 72-73 mph until he hit the bus."

I think these news reports listing the prescription and over the counter drugs found in his bag are prematurely demonizing the driver. So he had anti inflamatory drugs, cholesterol drugs, ect. Inconsequential, in my opinion. Sure- some may cause drowsiness, but so can milk. So can turkey. So can a company forcing you to work 14 hour shifts overnight.

If they found turkey in his cab, would they list it in the news reports? I doubt it.

If I ever get in an accident, they will find a myriad of "drugs" in my truck. I carry a fully stocked medical kit in my bag, including multiple pain medicines. I just found it unnecessary to list the contents of his bag, perpetuating the "drugged out trucker" image, when in reality it's a pretty normal list of meds.

As far as the pipe, it doesn't look good, but It could be very possible it was very well stashed in some remote nook by a previous driver of the truck who forgot about it, and it was jolted out by the accident. I know that is far fetched, but a possibility.

I actually found a loaded 9mm magazine up in the top passenger cubby hole in a Volvo, hidden behind the truck owner manuals, that a previous driver had evidently forgotten about. I rolled for almost a year with it up there before I found it, and delivered to some places where getting caught with live ammo wouldn't have gone over very well.
