Indeed. Did someone pull the pin? Bent kingpin? Not fully locked in place? Not snug to the plate?

Driving in the dark can be challenging and more risky then many realize, and those twilight hours can be especially challenging and deceiving, especially for those who have certain vision problems. Add this to those who have a short distance attention span and you get this sort of occurrence. You never know what the next moment is going to present you with.

Oh, it was at night? Then yes, I can easily see how that could happen. Several years ago on I-94 near the cities, a TT went through the median, overturned was lying on it's side across both lanes. At night. (bottom towards traffic) A bus came along, never saw the trailer, and plowed into the trailer. Killed the bus driver and several students. One of the things the investigators were trying to determine, is why there weren't any reflective strips on the bottom of the trailer? Crazy stuff.

I remember sitting at a terminal in LA and watching the local news. Traffic had slowed a little on the 5(!) and there was a rear-ender in the L lane.

Someone was shooting video from the R shoulder and for ~5 minutes motorists continued to crash into the crashed vehicles, sometimes futilely braking 1/2 second before impact, sometimes not.

Many if not most motorists out there are looking right over the front edge of their hoods.

This happened last year about this time just north of Milwaukee. I know this has been out there for a while, but it shows how unconnected these driver's are in the snow. You think things calmed down, but at 3:20, things get nuts. ( and these idiots are out BEHIND their cars, some did get hit) Kudos to the WalMart driver for stopping far enough back. You know that flatbed early on had soiled underwear. Clearly they were loaded or they never would have stopped. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHC27viPYtA

Unfriggen real! So many stupid people in one place! I witnessed something similiar on I 20 eastbound in East TX. except this happened on a sunny day & dry roads. I was power napping in a rest area on the westbound side, engine off. I kept hearing this dull thud noise. I looked out of the sleeper curtain to see what the hell was going on. Traffic on the eb side was stopped dead in the travel lanes, many of the drivers had apparently not been paying attention and skidded into stopped vehicles. I sat there and watched the show for a good 10 mins as idiot after idiot braked too late and either skidded into stopped cars or the median safety cable. I could not beleive what I was seeing, that that many drivers werent paying atttention to traffic conditions!
