Semi crash closes I-40 near Laguna

LAGUNA, N.M. (KRQE) -#New Mexico State Police have Interstate 40 near mile marker 117 closed in both directions due to a multiple-vehicle crash involving two semi-trucks.

All traffic is being diverted onto the frontage road at exit 114 and exit 117. NMDOT is reporting major delays and asking drivers to use caution in the area.

No details have been released about the cause of the accident or if there are any injuries.

    OK THATS IT!!!!

That's about the third or 4th one in the past 3 months there. We missed that one by about 7 hours.

It's a 5% down grade with a right hand bend at the bottom (east bound, or left if you're coming west), POSTED at 65mph - 10 below the NM speed limit of 75. The local police patrol it on occaision, and I often see big trucks getting ticketed.

There's nothing tricky about the curve, it highlights the sad fact that a lot of drivers cannot negotiate a curve, and keep their lane. The situation is exacerbated by the short downgrade, allowing company trucks to raise another 10 mph in speed.

Simple solution - Obey posted speed limit, position yourself away from other trucks, stay in lane.

Thanks for the picture post - picture says a 1000 words.

Just been a bad time for truck axcidents and multi vehicle pileups already this year. Worse, I think, than last year. And real winter has just gotten started.

If I had the option financially, I'd park the truck until spring thaw. Since that's not an option, just gonna have to be even more careful than I already am when the roads get bad. Hate to see these pileups happen, would hate even mlore to get involved in one....

No - it doesn't. We came throough there 6am, I know conditions change, but the forecast was steady for today.

I look at the marks on the road and guardrails every time I go through there - I think NMDOT probably has a pre-fabricated section of replacement guardrail ready to go for that curve . . . and just waits on the call.

OK, sadly, this is a little more acceptable, as accidents are going to happen, no matter what we do, but just not over a hundred vehicles in the same crash. Hopefully the drivers are ok, but that one in Michigan was just downright nasty and senseless.

I went thru there right after Xmas. Posted speed limits are for 4 wheelers. Trucks should slow down below that. If Mr Supertrucker wants to speed , stuff will happen eventually. Too bad for those guys, hope everyone else stays safe.

Doesn't look like an overspeed rollover, since it's to the inside of the curve.

I agree with all of your comments, and will add: DO NOT TRY TO PASS ANYONE IN A CURVE. Sight distance is severely limited, and drivers tend to leave their lanes in a curve. Add in the fact that they're on the phone or have their ear buds in, and they don't even realize that someone is driving alongside them as they drift over.
