Crash kills truck driver, closes I-71
Columbus Dispatch, OH
A fatal crash involving an overturned semi at the I-70/71 split early yesterday forced authorities to close northbound I-71 lanes for hours, Columbus police said.
The driver of the eastbound rig, Anatoliy V. Mikhalyuk, 42, of Inman, S.C., crashed the semi and overturned with a load of furniture about 1 a.m. Police said he was partially ejected from his cab and died at the scene.
The crash also destroyed a light pole and guardrail.
The investigation and cleanup detoured traffic until about 4:30 p.m. It was the first reported motorist fatality in the state during the Thanksgiving holiday, according to the State Highway Patrol.
Police said Mikhalyuk was en route to Connecticut.
