Most accidents seem to happen within the drivers 3-6 hours of driving time after a 10 hour break (drivers that are legal that is).

    Now my question is this:

Are you stopping for your 10 hour break and

Sleeping the first 5 hours (or eating the so many hours and sleeping so many and sitting up bored waiting for that 10 hour break to end, thus leaving you say breaking for 7-8 hours so when it comes to about the 4-6 hours you have "really" been awake for say 11 hours?

I really want honest feed back on this if at all possible. I see many "major" accidents happen within the first 3-6 hours of working.

What's up with that? Give feed back so I might make suggestions:biggrin_25525:

do away with that one damming word in the 14 hour rule [continuous] so people can take a break or power nap and the rules would be about as good as the will ever get

I can, will and have taken a nap any time I feel too tired to drive safely. If the load dosn't look like it will make it on time,I call dispatch and inform them, if they want to reschedule fine, if they don't the load will get there about 10 seconds after I do. I have never had anyone tell me I had to drive tired or unlawfully. I wish they would,I've always wanted to own a trucking company!!!:biggrin_25511:

Drivers that are legal, and take the ten hour break are allowed to sleep the hours they need. Are you implying or suggesting when they need to sleep and for how much now?

I can show you a legal log book at any time. Does that mean that I really did what that log book says I did? If I was allowed to stop that 14 hour clock and take a break during either morning or evening rush hour, life would be a lot easier for us out here. There wouldn't be such a race against time and drivers could and maybe would drive less aggressive out here.

Trying to run legal with new laws forces me to run when I am not rested and I am tired and can hardly keep my eyes open. I don't have any problems with either when I run to what my body requires, but cannot be logged legally. Sorry Logs, which would you want.

A tired but legal driver, or a rested illegal driver?
No need to quote the regs, truthfull answer.

Don't know about the rest of you but here is what I do as much as I can. I run eight hours straight. Shut down between 3 and 5 pm. I stay down till 4am and then run again.

Sometimes I down for 11 hours. Sometimes 14 or 16, depends on the load. I drive before rush hour begins and in most cases I am down before rush hour starts up again, and before the truck stops fill up. Yep I'm that annoying idiot in the good spot when you arrive.

I do sleep rather comfy in my plush memory foam air matress for a 8 to 12 hours. 34 hour restarts I will be out for up to 16 hours.

Now what gets me is places that don't allow idling. I use idleair when I can afford to. Yet sometimes they are not around. In Hellafornia where we can no longer idle and it gets up to 90 (heck even 75) we cook in out sleepers. Nevada you can idle for 15 minutes. Go to New York in winter when it's 12 below zero and see how well you sleep in those conditions when you can idle for 3-5 minutes. New Hampsire gives us 15 minutes from 32 to -10.
I have a copy of the laws next to me along with exceptions and fines/sentenceing.
Want to let us be less tired? Let us sleep comfortably or give us the means to. I can set my load plan and get it there on time on my own schedule. I just need to know I can pull over in a safe area. Kick back for a little while and sleep comfortably.
