Family is first. I hope your mother in law's cancer goes into remission. I lost my dad to cancer and I know how hard even the treatments can be on everyone. Hopefully things will get better and then you can return to trucking if you desire. May 2013 be a good year for you.

Guess I'll try this thread first looking for an answer. Has anybody heard about a new DOT regulation, that according to my recruiter at a prospective employer took effect 1/1/2014, which requires that smokers undergo a pulmonary test and possibly an arterial blood gas test prior to certification? What kinda bull is this?

Disregard my post above...I found the answer.
391.41(b)(5)
A person is physically qualified to drive a commercial motor vehicle if that person:
Has no established medical history or clinical diagnosis of a respiratory dysfunction likely to interfere with the ability to control and drive a commercial motor vehicle safely.
Since a driver must be alert at all times, any change in his or her mental state is in direct conflict with highway safety. Even the slightest impairment in respiratory function under emergency conditions (when greater oxygen supply is necessary for performance) may be detrimental to safe driving.
There are many conditions that interfere with oxygen exchange and may result in incapacitation, including emphysema, chronic asthma, carcinoma, tuberculosis, chronic bronchitis and sleep apnea. If the medical examiner detects a respiratory dysfunction, that in any way is likely to interfere with the driver's ability to safely control and drive a commercial motor vehicle, the driver must be referred to a specialist for further evaluation and therapy.
Anticoagulation therapy for deep vein thrombosis and/or pulmonary thromboembolism is not unqualifying once optimum dose is achieved, provided lower extremity venous examinations remain normal and the treating physician gives a favorable recommendation.
Ok..now you can't drive if you smoke, you can't take Chantix to stop smoking, you can't eat in lieu of smoking (BMI issues)...pretty soon we will all have to shave our heads so a stray hair doesn't fall into our eyes an adversely effect our ability to control our vehicles. <not sure if I am being sarcastic here or not>
These freaking regulations get more idiotic every day. -
Don't take Chantix to stop. I stopped by using E-cigs. I know, I know, many think they are the same thing. But if one takes the time to research it, it has been found that nicotine, by itself, is actually somewhat beneficial. It was all the other crap in cigarette smoke that does the damage. All an e-cig is, is water, glycerin, and nicotine. And the patch and gums include nicotine also. That is how the medical community started learning about the benefits of nicotine. Before the patches and gums, nicotine had not been looked at as to its effects by itself. Since they have studied it, it is found to reduce depression, help those with ADHD, prevent and reduce the risks and complications of Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and several other conditions. Some studies have shown it also helps reduce the risk of colon cancer. There is no evidence that nicotine, by itself, causes any major issues.
Oh, forgot one other benefit. Nicotine has been found to improve the blood circulation in body extremities. This is very beneficial to those that have diabetes and other circulatory issues. -

Alot of these DOT physical requirements seem to be dictated by the company. I found it difficult to get into Swift, but once I got some experience, it all came down to if I was qualified - f everything else. Neck size? Whats that...

I also am overweight and have an over large neck.. I had to do the same thing. see if your company will not pay for it mine did.. I pass with flying colors.. good luck
