They have regular medium duty brakes. They would have the power to stop a actual load, in a down hill condition.

In the days of my youth, I loaded a 26' U-haul slap ### full of car parts and brought it on down to FL from AL.

I had 10 Y-block Ford motors @600lbs ea, a couple 4spd trannys, some Model A Ford parts and a bunch of sheet metal and small parts. I figure I had close to 14K on the truck, but I hammered down anyways. Took forever and a day to get rolling from a dead stop, it had a ladies transmission and even pulling it down in low it wouldn't pull a greasy string out of a fat hog's ###.

    TH series Uhaul
    Moving space: 1,611 cu. ft.
    Max load: 7,400 lbs.
    Inside dimensions: 26ft 5in deep x 7ft 8in wide x 8ft 3in high
    Mom's Attic: 3ft deep x 7ft 8in wide x 3ft 1in high

This is right off Uhaul load page. Just our steer axle carries more weight than there truck.

Hell, CA says all trucks that arent pickups must stop at scales! You have to watch the sign.

Infact, if there isnt a sign that says who has to enter, you don't have to enter. There is one scale in the whole country I know of that lacks the sign, and its in the middle of Wyoming. If you go in there, they will weigh you, pull you in, and grump at you for interrupting their nap! My question is, what the hell is the point then. I went in there cause i saw a sign that said "weigh station - open"........

But ok, I was a little confused about your vacuum brakes. There have in the past been brakes that actually ran on vacuum, which would be the total opposite of air brakes. They have less power because the maximum vacuum you can ever pull is atmospheric pressure...14psi or so... But you are mostly right. There's also air over hydraulic brakes, which are....still air brakes...

Actually its not a matter of licensing. Its a matter of weight rating.

Actually its a matter of BOTH know it all!

Licensing is dealt with by the state. The rating is the rating. The licensed weight can be found on the registration..and is probably higher than the GVWR from the manufacturer.

That is not always true. Here in PA for example there are three registration ratings that you can put on a pickup truck with the lightest rating my Dodge 2500 would be over what it is registered for with just a driver in the truck. With the heaviest rating I can haul 2300 pounds and be legal registration wise, and GVWR wise.

Most states do not require a uhaul to go to a weigh station. In those states, the cops wouldn't care even if the bumper is dragging on the ground... States with weigh stations that say "all trucks enter", they have to enter. I dont remember which one but one state requires all rental cars to stop too. But states that say commercial vehicles enter, ....nope. Not if its just your personal belongings inside. Trucks over X tons? Depends on what you weigh.

No here is where you better be registered for what you.

Go to michigan. You'll find a LOT of semi tractors way beyond the combination weight rating from the manufacturer...since the weight limit in michigan is 160,000......

I've been to Michigan more than you will ever know ,and for the record it go's like this.
The maximum gross vehicle weight allowed on a “federal-weight-law truck” is 80,000 pounds,
with four of its five axles carrying 17,000 pounds each. The calculated maximum allowable
gross vehicle weight on the heaviest “Michigan-weight-law truck” is 164,000 pounds, which can
only be achieved with the use of eleven properly spaced axles. Most of these axles carry only
    13,000 pounds each.
It would take two and a quarter 80,000 pound trucks to carry the same cargo as a single 164,000

It wont be long before someone comes on here saying that he needs an MC# and DOT# and a class B to drive a uhaul.

Not sure why the chip is on your shoulder, but you like to put people down I see it in most post's you make ,which is a sure sign you are insecure. Tell you what I had My own trucks .I did all my own repairs except for rears it was easier to exchange. I did my own income taxes, and fuel taxes. I made money when there was money to be made, and I was successful. You are not going to talk down to me ,because I don't think you have a clue, only an ego. I probably have more miles backing up than you have going forward. So now one more time (GVWR) That's the whole deal vehicle, load tongue weight if any fuel passengers the whole deal weight the Mfgr recommends. So subtract your empty weight from it ,and that is your net. You better be registered for it in PA they love to put any truck big ,or small on the portables in my state.

Can your vehicle pull the trailers?
    GVWR = GVW(Vehicle) + GVW(Trailer)
This is the information you need to determine if your
vehicle is rated to handle the trailers. The information is provided by the manufacturer and is found on the door plate of your vehicle. Your vehicle's manufacturer should also provide towing information in the owners manual.

GVWR- Gross Vehicle Weight Rating - The maximum
weight the vehicle is rated to carry. This includes the
weight of the vehicle, people, cargo
and any towed vehicles. This manufactures rating
    should never be exceeded.

GVW - Gross Vehicle Weight - Actual weight of
    vehicle, people and cargo.
