Yep... drove out 116 and just past Route 15 there is a sign that says Prohibited 102" over 28 1/2 feet. So we didn't go through. Funny that PennDOT doesn't know about the restriction.... but there you go.

Thanks everyone for all of your help. May have saved me a very unpleasant ticket (as opposed to the pleasant ones, I guess.....)

Assuming your coming from south.....3 options
    81 ex5 in pa....east to 15...north to 116....east into Hanover
    81 to 70 in Hagerstown Md....east to 15....north to 116...east to Hanover....
From 81 in Va....exit 315 rt7 east to rt 340 north....340 merges w/15 just as of Frederick...then north into pa to rt 116 east
There is a reroute on 30 west of the burg....but it takes you way north and its a Pita.....couple ways to sneak thru woods thru Hagerstown....but somebody have to show u...
Also if u do take 16 in Pa across....you will see 116 at the bottom of mountain off 16....Do NOT take it....it brings you right back to the square in Gettysburg

I come from near Gburg most of my life and have taken all sorts of rigs through town. That is not legally per that sign. I don't do much in town except to get across the square (Which is a pretty big deal....) and keep moving on that 30. Has more town squares in Hanover, Oxford etc)

You can try to get to US 15 and run through the woods until you get around GBurg but I would defer to someone else for specific routing since many years have passed for me since I was up there last. Everyehwere south of I-81 has loads of roads you can use hither thither and yon.

Im sorry I cannot offer much clarification again I considered it home and if they did write me a ticket it will just be paid and move on through until the next one. It just did not bother me to consider the restrictions in those days. There is another old restriction I remember this one on old 15 north of 81 through what I recall as Marysville. A smaller town by the river. They don't like big uns rolling through there on account of all the cars parked close.

I can caution you to try and stay out of the Battlefield. Those roads are not for big trucks, not even the two laners. And throw in the random stops, short starts and people running about you don't want to go through there.

Coming from the north on I-81, above Harrisburg etc., get on 83 south, then 581 west to US 15, down to US 30 east. From the PA pike or Carlisle area of I-81, get on PA 34 south, behave in Mt. Holly Springs, then bear left on PA 94 south. From the Maryland line on I-81 get off at exit 5, PA 16 west, becomes 140 in Maryland, to US 15 north, to either PA 116 east or up to US 30 east, depending on where in the Hanover area you are going.
