Hello everyone. I've been driving for over 15 years now but I'm curious about the following:
I would like to put a scanner in my truck. Honestly I would not use it find out where speed traps are or warn other drivers of where cops are at. I would like to have just to be able to listen to the various departments transmitting... I think it would be interesting to listen to the police say in NYC, or Chicago, or listen to them up in Canada. Listen to emergency departments, fire, air traffic control, all that.
Are truckers allowed to have a scanner in the truck? If not what is the reasoning? I'd really be interested to hear from Dieselbear on this. He would definitely know the inside scoop on this.
Thanks everyone!

It has been band by a few states or counties, but it's a local deal. I think its your right. Its not the scanner it self they outlaw, but listening to police calls. Still think its your right.
I have a scanner, If I'm in Missouri I know they have a problem with it I'll hit the amature radio bank of channels when or if you get pulled over. I was questioned about it in Illinois and I told them it was a Amature Radio Scanner not a Police Scanner and the cop dropped it. -
I was sitting waiting to get one of the trailers that i was loading that day and i had it on search and a call had come in to the plant i was at. I got all excited and turned up the volume and tuns out this kid was changing the batteries in a forklift by himself and the battery slipped or somthing and took his finger. They sent out an ambulance a cop and one of the medical fire trucks. Kinda cool i guess to know whats going on and not have to ask the shipping office or whom ever.
I also like to listen to the public distrubance calls always reminds me of the ray stevens song Margret. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hU1F2RrmMlc -
Uniden BCD996XT is the best Ive ever owned, takes abit to learn it
Otherwise the cops cant hide from this one LOL!
Running scanners without "trunking"capabilities is worthless in todays world -
Do you have a license for it ???
Are you a convicted felon ???
Is it permanently mounted, or handheld ??
Do you relay the information to another person ??
Is it a distraction ??
Do you really need the hassle ??
What are the fines ??
