What started this unsafe driving habit???

prob. some truck driver training school somewhere thought this is a good idea. Half of them couldn't drive a truck from one side of town to the other and yet they are "teaching people to drive a big truck"

 

I have seen it too....also on merges. The driver just assumes that everyone, especially the other semi's are going to move over for them. Guess what? Sometimes you can't!
I agree that it is stupid and dangerous!
Some drivers got killed a week ago because of this very thing!

 

They are idiots.
I remember when drivers had enough common sense not to do stupid things like that-no matter what the law was.Sure do miss the days of respect and concern for others...

 

Truck Drivng Schools.....And the Non driving people that come out of them!

 

Actually there are laws in some states prohibiting "driving in the breakdown lane." But there are also laws about "yielding to oncoming traffic close enough to pose a hazard." So, which law makes more common sense to break? Which law is "less un-safe" to break.

Remember that common sense is pretty un-common anymore.

 

I know for a fact that many truck driving schools teach their students this method of reentering the highway from the shoulder.
They also teach students not to start downshifting when leaving the highway until they are already on the off ramp.

Both of these practices blew my mind. I went through a school back in 1985 and they didn't teach either of those methods. After being off the road for quite some time I had to go take a refresher in 2006 and that's how they taught it.

Leaving the freeway at 55 mph on an off ramp that is clearly marked at 35 mph is insane. And then they expect you to downshift while it's taking everything you have just to keep it on the road. When I say downshift I mean from tenth to first by the time you get to the end of the ramp. It will work on a long off ramp but not on a short curved ramp. I can't believe that more students haven't rolled their trucks during training.

 

Well I just graduated from my school today and I have to agree. BOTH these were taught in the "classroom" the first two weeks and although I'll never claim to be the sharpest tool in the box, I'm not the dullest either and it just went against ALL the common sense I have. Heck, I don't even do this with my bike or car!

Fortunately, the "yard & road" instructors were all old school drivers. The least of which was 37 years out there and for the next 4 weeks they taught me how to "drive", not just how to "work the truck". I feel very lucky for this level of knowledge and common sense and listened to every word they uttered. I feel quite confident with my "new skill" and I can't wait to start honing and perfecting it the proper and SAFE way so maybe 5 to 10 years from now, I can call myself a TRUCKER!
