    I ran the .25 at the pre and a flag at the post,, then a flag at the pre and a .25 at the post...

    DOT never said anything and the companies when ran through their computer for checks never caught it...

    The rules say , flag at pre and .25 at post... but I always tried to tie the pre to a fuel stop before I rolled..

    always did the walkaround pre and post... but why waste .25 more,,, just flag one of them...

    Now how is the EOB going to handle it?

    One of the reasons I try to look at what is legal is how we need to code the TND for the logs...

    Thanks,
    Mark

    I never understood how a flagged pre-trip was accepted on any level ?
    yet a .25 was accepted on a post-trip ?

    You wont take .25 to check your saddle before roll,but you will before knocking off for OD/TO ??

    FMSCA 395.2 Definitions for On Duty, which is recorded on your Log Book

    On duty time means all time from the time a driver begins to work or is required to be in readiness to work until the time the driver is relieved from work and all responsibility for performing work. On-duty time shall include:
    (1) All time at a plant, terminal, facility, or other property of a motor carrier or shipper, or on any public property, waiting to be dispatched, unless the driver has been relieved from duty by the motor carrier;
    (2) All time inspecting, servicing, or conditioning any commercial motor vehicle at any time;

    No specific time is specified though as general rule of thumb - 15 to 30 mins.

    The last post sums it up best. Log it as you do it. Safe to say the focus should be on the pretrip as any defects found there could affect the safe performance of the vehicle. Think about the airlines. The pilots do a pre flight check and walkaround. They do not do a post flight.
    I typically log 15 min. on pre trip and flag my load inspection stops with a flagged 5 min. post trip at te end. Although I heard on Road dog Trooper Monty Dial says there's nothing in the regs that says you have to show a post trip. You just have to complete a post trip inspection report.

    100 air-miles is an exemption to logging and it is NOT a log but is a time record so it does not have to show a pre-trip/post-trip. You do need to perform the inspections but it is considered part of the time spent working which is all you are recording on your time record...

    You do not need to carry a book if you meet the 100-air mile exemption, it could be a time card back in the rack next to the punch clock.

    The regulations do say as soon as you realize you will exceed the 12 consecutive hours on duty then you are required to draw a grid log 'from memory' and complete it for that day.

    Since I was using a scanning service, they would only account for 100 air-mile drivers if they used a grid log as their time record. I trained my air-mile guys to only show the start end points and log the time strictly on-duty, not driving and mark "time record' in big letters where you would normally show your locations thru your day. This also meant they had a grid log to use when they ran over.

    Once they were all on board with this we stopped getting hassled by the DOT storm troopers. Part of the training was to train them to answer the demand, 'Show me your log book!" with I'm exempt, I don' have a logbook...wanna' see my Time Record?

    When the DOT did the audit they didn't want to look at any of the 100 air-mile guys; just the OTR guys who were doing RODS [records of duty status=DOT's name for a log]...

    First of all the pre-trip is not required to be done in writing, the post-trip is required to be done in writing. I have a sticky thread in the regulations regarding pre-trip & post-trip.

    Local drivers should be doing a pre-trip & post-trip inspection, they should be filling out some type of inspection form for their post-trip.. The regulations only allow 100 air mile radius drivers to not fill out a daily log sheet & your hours of service is different however you can follow under the OTR regulations if you fill out a log sheet, tracking each duty status like an OTR driver.

    We all go to orientation. You do what your company tells you to do. They know what their auditors want. You want to get creative, you are burning your own hours.

    My particular company wants 15 minutes pretrip and flag the post trip.

    U only have to show time for 1 or the other not both. The company I just left told us to flag pretrip, but no time shown, and to flag post trip and show time 15 min. is enough. I was with them for 20 months and logged it that way and had dot ask for logs several times and they were fine, so save yourself 15 min and show time for only 1 of them.
