Werner Driver Goest to Sleep Crashes with Electronic Logs

    Seen a 2011 Prostar on I 44 in Oklahoma where the driver went to sleep and crashed. He was using electronic logs and had a team driver on board. Don't know how bad it hurt them but the truck only had 44,000 miles and tore it up pretty bad. He ran off the road a pretty long ways, ran through a bunch of little trees, then hit a big one that stopped him. The truck looked totaled to me. I got this info from the wrecker driver that was towing it back to Weiner in Dallas. I just wanted to point out that the electronic logs didn't prevent this one. Makes me wonder if the electronic logs are going to cause more crashes than they prevent because they make people stop and sleep when they are not ready to sleep. To me it's like sleeping on command, which is something that seems very impractical.

    That's because "being legal" doesn't mean "being safe"!!!

    Many times it would have been perfectly LEGAL to start or continue to drive but completely UNSAFE to do so!!!
    Conversely, there have been occasions where it would have been SAFE for me to drive but, because of the asinine regulations, ILLEGAL to drive.

    that's why EOBR's and electronic logs are bs...... nobody can account for what anybody does
    while off duty , whether they sleep or play pin-ball .

    can't fix stupid.....if you get sleepy you have to have enough common sense to park it

    The e-log didn't tell him TO drive it told him WHEN HE COULD, it was up to the driver! Blame him not the equipment! As a side note I hope both are ok

    Electronic logs won't affect teams as much. Sometimes you just can't sleep when it's your time to, and being a team, you are expected to drive your shift, sleepy or not. Also, it's hard to sleep when the driver is bumping docks, getting in and out of the truck, and forklifts are running in and out of the trailer.

    Since teams can't do the five and five anymore, it's hard to get someone that lost sleep rested back up.

    That 5/5 split was some bs anyways. I did that for about 1 month with my old team partner,and told him if he wanted to continue like this i would be flying solo. Besides that,Weiner drivers are funky anyways,no offense to those that are skilled,but some of these new Weiner drivers--sheesh.

    I only used the 5 and 5 when one or both drivers had been up and were too tired and sleepy to run a full shift. It would get us to the destination, where we could both get some rest and return to normal shifts.

    E-logs, EOBR's or any other technology will never stop the driver who is sick, sleep deprived, or just not conditioned to run 11 hrs.

    Was this driver the student?
