cruiser, yes, my left eye has a small prescription and my right eye (the bad one) is a strong prescription. my eyesight in my right eye is very bad. cant read the big E with or without glasses. glasses only help that eye at very close distances. for example, im on a laptop (15 inch screen) with the screen approx 18 to 20 inches away and if i close my good eye i cannot read any of the letters im typing without glasses. if i put them on i can very faintly make out bits and pieces of certain letters but nothing is defined. now thats bad eyesight! for the most part all of my seeing is done with my left eye. the thing is, in the past i was told i just had a severe stigmatism in that eye. from what ive researched about it, its very likely i do have amblyopia caused by the severe astigmatism bc as a kid i had to wear this goofy patch for treatment of lazy eye, try being in 6th grade wearing a big red goofy patch! good times!! i know there is now lasik for astigmatism and read last night that some doctors are actually treating lazy eye through surgery now. ive emailed another eye place that supports these treatments for another opinion. in todays society with the modern technology i find it pretty hard to believe there supposedly isnt a treatment for this (according to the first doctor i went to). im not giving up hope just yet, i will continue to persue this until im out of options. all the BS has become very frustrating at times but nobody said life was easy...........

wldbgsxy, i would def tell your recruiter before you go to wherever your going for training. it would suck to get there only to be sent home for not passing the eye exam.

I have a little different situation than you as I own my own rig and have my own authority, so I don't know what employers would say about the waiver, however I would think if the FMCSA clears you to drive it should'nt be a problem, but the real world don't allways work the way you think it should.

It is a funny, sad, story about my eye. My sister who is 6 years older than me was carrying me, dropped me on my head when I was 2 months old. I have a scare right in the hair line above my left eye. I am the only child of 3 that wears glasses. I think that is what messed up my eye. My friends always teased me and said, "I knew something was wrong with you." No way to fix, asked many Drs.

I've been driving for 27 years. Had a lazy eye since 5 years old. When I first started driving one eye was good enough. Then they changed in the early 90's. Every time that medical card comes around I sweat it out. Went to the eye doctor today and now the best I can get in the left eye is 20/60 with lenses. I've been trying to find out maybe there is a grandfathering rule beings that I was licensed well before the rule change. Nothing yet. I did read the waiver post above and maybe look into that. I can drive perfectly fine. But because I have a hard time reading some stupid chart with one eye doesn't mean I am an unqualified and unsafe driver. As mentioned earlier 27 years behind the wheel 3 fender benders and the last was 17 years ago. All the driving is in NYC. Meanwhile there are drivers, with perfect eyesight according to the government, running poor pedestrians over. The latest was a dump truck on 1st Ave killing a woman and the driver didn't even have a valid license. But me not being able to read the 40 line makes me unqualified. What a joke. If anyone knows of a grandfathering rule or more info on the waiver please post. I will really much appreciate it.

if i didnt know better i'd think that was me. ive had the same complaints. 20 years (non cdl) accident free. and in my 20 years driving i havent ever had "commute to work" miles. always had jobs that required travel and/or local delivery routes. but the government decides that i would not be a safe driver because of that #### eye chart. atleast you have prior cdl experience to help you if you get the waiver form. i do not. good luck. me, i havent gave up yet, have another eye appt in about 3 weeks.
    it really is frustrating though.........

Thanks for the help guys. I'll be able to pull it out. Frank, patch the good eye when sitting around the house. Try focusing on close items and then far. A lazy eye works. But you are one eye dominate. Like being right handed. I tried this at a later age which made it harder. from 20/200 I got it to 20/80 without lenses and 20/40 with, over time though. If they did it when I was a kid, I'd be alright.

UPDATE: i have been to the eye dr a few times since my last post. i have also been trying the patch thing in the evenings while watching tv, at todays appointment i was reading the 20/20 line with ease in my good eye and could read the 20/40 line in my bad eye, not with ease but scraped by except for one number. i couldve got it but wasnt aware they throw numbers and letters at me now. was in the mindset of letters only and can only read them on shape. the dr said i was 20/40 20/50 in the bad peeper. im almost there! as of now i could probably pass the vision test depending on the test. does anyone know if you can just randomly stop by the dmv and take an eye exam to see if i'd make the official cut or not? i dont want to schedule a psyical just yet, kinda scared of another let down.
    thanks
