so I just recently got my hazmat endoresment, and one of the questions was, when are you allowed in a tunnel? the answer was NEVER. Is this true for all hazmat or only explosives? I seem to remember there was exceptions if you don't have explosives, maybe not. Also, what's the best way to avoid tunnels? How do you know when they are coming up and will you have time to get off the highway? I have a Rand mcnally TND 700, I think that will route me around them, but not sure if it's 100%.

Just more BS test questions--if the test stated any hazmat is NEVR allowed in a tunnel--it is nonsense--and hazmat covers alot of territory--many/most tunnels have different regs--some are stricter than others--there is another thread on here for example concerning Hazmat's being allowed thru Eisenhauer for certain reasons at certain times--Pa tpke have changed and updated the tunnel restrictions a few times in last 10years or so-
Now if they were talking about ExplosivesA--and not hazmat in general--I would have to say that is true--have never seen a tunnel that allows Expolsives--
As for routes around--and allowable--Rand Macnally Motor Carriers--list all restricted routes state by state--that is a good start--ac120 Thanks this. -
you talking about the atlas book right? so before i begin my route, i plan to see where i'm going and i look in the book and make sure i'm allowed to go that way, with whatever hazmat i'm hauling... -

The test questions I've gotten only cover explosives in tunnels... you're supposed to have HAZMAT routes pre-planned to avoid restricted areas.
