Everyone want's to tell you you were wrong, but they wern't you. If you had dispatches and were doing your best to keep moving, thinking you could make it but finally did all you could do and had to stop, then you do what you had to do. If you could have made it to the next place off the road to park that would have been good, but that can't always happen. Back in the days before cops and others were *ricks, I have pulled off on the emergency lane and slept for a few hours because I couldn't go on safely any farther.

I bet all these know it alls have done something simular too. You do what you have to do sometimes. The cops may roust you and run you off, or more than likely in these days of CSA points, they will ticket you for fun. But do not drive unsafe, even if you get a ticket for doing what is safe. Too many armchair quarterbacks sometimes.

I'm a former safety guy. So, yeah bro, that was totally wrong. Justifying your actions by being too fatigued to get somewhere "safe" to stop or taking your 30 minute break on the side of the road is wrong. If you've been fighting a raging chest cold for several days the correct thing to do for your own personal safety, the safety of others, and for your company is to acknowledge the fact that you are ill and communicate that so you don't get dispatched until you are well enough to drive.

Sheridan, WY: Got pulled into the bay for a level 1 and she wrote me up for excessive oil leak (the drip on the floor was the size of a nickle after sitting there for 1 1/2 hours and a non-working license plate light on the rear of my tractor where there was no license plate. I wasn't happy, but I didn't grumble too much. She was so nice about it, I was expecting her to hand me some cookies with my paperwork. It was stupid, but she was following the book to the letter and the book says the license plate light must be working, if equipped. I'm okay with her doing her job and following the book, but there should have been some common sense enforcement, there. The oil leak was bogus, though. No fine, but it did hit my CSA.

Spokane, WA: Sooper Trooper did a L2 inspection and made me take my spinner off the wheel. Okay, I knew better and was hoping he wouldn't notice, as it is a violation. He didn't write me up for it. He did write me up for not having my logs printed ) I run DDL on my laptop. Evidently, that rule has been changed so I don't have to print them up each day, but must have a way to print them if they want them). The thing that really torqued me was, when he was looking over my logs, he noticed that I was showing somewhere around 750 miles for one of the days. He asked me about the speed limit where I was and I told him 75 in those states (NE and WY). He then told me to watch my speed. I said, "Sure thing", while thinking that it was none of his concern how fast I drove outside the state of WA. He also told me that he drove for 22 years before becoming a "cop". He was pretty young, so I figure he must have started driving when he was 10. Passive-aggressive jack-### is what he was.

West bound West Memphis scale hit me for the same thing about a month ago. Truck is 13 years old and has the factory installed reflective tape on the back of the cab but it doesn't make the upsidedown L in the top corners. Just a warning but still a PITA. Whatever just give me the paper so I can get on down the road. yall can all rest easy though cause now I got the upsidedown L in the top corners. You cant see them because of the 53' trailer but they are there and the highways are safe once again.

This tread has been helpful as I just replaced all my reflective tape on my flat bed trailer and tractor as sure enough when I checked some were chipped and delaminating and no inverted L on the tractor. Also now carry the leaf blower to ensure no loose debris on the deck or jack stands. Thanks all.

Yeah... I remember that! It was sometime back around 1998-99 I think. Not only were they calling relatives to do the work, they were actually crawling under the trailers to do the inspections and loosening slack adjusters so they could write up the truckers who would then have to call their pet service people who were in on the scam. Several of the DOT's went to jail over the deal.

Civil Forfiture. He does not have to charge the owner of the knives he only has to charge the knives themselves.

Mid 1980's I had a level 1 at a scale house in California, and the Inspector told me I could be fined for the unused factory drilled holes in the frame rails.
The truck passed, but I just thought that was pretty strange! The pre-drilled extra bolt holes were there for other options that could have been, but were not installed at the factory.
    Curious what your thoughts are!

I did put a bolt, nut, and washer in every exposed hole just in case I saw that guy again!

Most quixotic encounter I had was with an Indiana State Trooper gave me a warning ticket for a chipped Windshield then put a CVSA sticker on said windshield. He said the Windshield didn't disqualify it from being a clean inspection. Looked great till the next day when the Company replaced the windshield.
