so the other day im hauling 42900 of furniture, 79800 total weight.
Im leaving dron Danville Va going toward 81 im forced to fill up on fuel because the next authorized station is pretty much in pa. So not thinking i fill up and im suddenly over weight on the steers and no matter what i did i could not get it to balance out. I got lucky because the weigh station in VA was CLOSED but what would you vets have done and i know i shoulda went around the station but im a rookie and we do dumb stuff like stay on the highway so aside from that.

At 79,800, you don't have much choice to move anything... being over on steers makes you pretty close on drives, so moving your fifth wheel back to take weight off the steers would likely put you over on your drives.

Next time, only fill up halfway?

You've got one helluva heavy empty weight, likely the heaviest I've seen - most likely, your shipper was off on their shipping weight by 2-3k.

First of all, what is the steer axle rated at? What are your steer tires rated at?

You can have 20K on a single axle provided the axle and the tires are rated for it. Generally, if you are only 100-200 pounds over, they won't bother you....but of course there's nothing to stop a prick of an officer who woke up on the wrong side of the bed that morning from bending you over for it.:biggrin_25513:

I did the same thing once and like you, a scale was closed (whew!), so I won't say that you're dumb (hey, you're asking a good question and dumb people don't do that; don't be too hard on yourself).

I guess the lesson was (for me) and is (for you): be careful and watch those axle weights. Safe trip.

"You can have 20K on a single axle provided the axle and the tires are rated for it"

Bad info, not true in most cases. The only standard is the manufacturer's rating that's posted on the label in the door frame. Tire rating is irrelevant, unless its UNDER the rating posted by the manufacturer.

The axle weight wasnt really a issue it was those va state police i just knew they would blow me up because they just dont care. I couldnt fill halfway because the truck would use half a tank coming through the mountains that would reduce the weight a bit but i was sure id still be over.

Ac120 i have prepass on my truck that i just got and i get pulled in everytime i want to go back to my old truck i hardly ever got pulled into the weigh station with that one.

The shipper i hear is suspect all the paperwork is in swedish the weight is in kg and they apparently load everything nose heavy this is my first load from them but now i know to watch them.

From Danville you should have used 29N,64W to 81N. That would have solved your problem. You didn

I'm with Ronin on this one. First look at your axle rating, then look at your tire rating. Both companies I was with had tires at 12350

You didn`t say how much you were over but you may have burnt it off before the scales. From Danville to anywhere in PA I would use Rt.29N,then 64W or 17N and I know your problem would have solved itself.

And you cant run 34000 on your drives if you choose to run your steers at 12350, you can run 33650 or a total of 46000 on both steers and drives. Sometimes I haul kegs loaded noseheavy for coors and bud, those loads suck. lol
