    Things must have changed since I got my last passport. All I had to do was supply two photos, fill out a form and mail it in with a check or money order.

    However, the double redundancy for TWIC and hazmat are a bit irritating. The background sources are identical.

    Having a TWIC can certainly be an asset. An owner op leased on to the chemical company I pull for told me he made a killing down south last winter because he had a TWIC. He would not tell me what he made, but did point to the brand new custom Pete 379 he was driving and said... It's Paid For!

    Is it correct that an employer has to require one before you can apply for a TWIC? Hey Injun is that a panhead I'm looking at? My first bike was a pan. Sure wish I kept it.

    The original intent of the TWIC card was to standardize the ID for entering ALL of the ports in the United States. Fine.

    What happened though was the ports all of a sudden realized that the money they would make off issuing port ID's was going to be lost.

    So what is the case now? I have to have BOTH. Not only do I pay for the TWIC card but I STILL have to pay for all of the separate port badges.

    I go to the port's all the time. If your friend (shredfit1) bought a new Pete for helping people get into the port, he would of had to help a whole s**tload of people. You can get into the port for between $50 and $80. His take on that would be less. So that is a LOT of escorting to do. Just sayin.

    Anyway, it is a rip. And as far as the "chip" in the TWIC badge. The port's don't even have the readers installed to scan them. The only one is in Miami, that I am aware of. And it doesn't work half the time. Once I get in I still have to go to a cop car and he radio's in to do an additional check. Ridiculous!!

    But hey, that the government for you.

    What he was doing was taking chemical trailers into a chemical plant that required a TWIC to enter. Many Chemical haulers are owner Ops, most don't have the card... they would drop the trailer, he would hook and take it in get it unloaded then do it again.

    Again, he wouldn't tell me what he made... only saying it was a killing and it paid for a new custom Pete in about three months of work.

    Being a chemical hauler myself, my guess is at least $200, maybe more, per trip in... perhaps doing 10 or more a day.... and he used very little fuel doing it... almost all pure profit.

    Getting the TWIC is half the battle.....

    For Cali ports you have to register on EMODAL.....
    Then you have register for every steamship line or cartage/stevedore company....
    Btw...The port of San Diego is no longer a member of EMODAL...So San Diego is now a separate filing...

    Oakland you're required to be part of STEP.....

    And don't forget CARB.....

    Glad your friend was able to fill a need and profit from it.

    After all, isn't that what all of us are trying to do? Just wish the buttwipes in DC and local governments would stop making it so hard.

    A Passport proves citizenship only. There is no background check performed. A criminal can get a passport.

    Yeah, when I first started haul chemcials I freaked out at the worth of some of the stuff. They started me on this stuff that was worth just over $200 per gallon. I hauled about 4600 gals per load or $920,000 of juice each time I loaded.

    Sort of scared me because if it's worth that much, someone might want to steal it or even kill for it. However, after talking to some of the people at the chemical plant... there would be little use for it in the open market... It needed to be mixed with other things at the plant to make worth something to consumers.

    Another Note:

    Governments should be afraid of the people...people should NEVER fear the government!

    Houston chem plants require TWIC and have the reader. Port does not have the reader and has a $6.00 guard look at it and then maybe a pull over...open your doors, hood ext.

    Good for his friend , hard to believe a carrier let him get away with all that cash. I could see a carrier bobtailing a co. unit a long way to catch that prize work.

    And I know Injun, I agree. But I did it anyway. We'll look at it again in 5 years and see if it's worth it.
