Why should I pay all that money to a civilian company, namely Lockheed, for what amounts to the same exact background check as required for a US passport that I already have?
That just seems like so much redundancy to be a valid solution. It seems more like privatization of our government security for profit. In addition, they provide no guarantee of privacy.
I let my HM endorsement go for precisely those reasons. Yet that is not taken into consideration by the CDL Taskforce in their report to Congress. They seem convinced of just the opposite; that separating the CDL from the background check will save the states resources and make drivers want to keep their HM endorsements because it's more convenient.
In my opinion, they have not based their recommendation on fact.

If I already have a US Passport, that should be acceptable to any state agency as proof of a background check.

Redundancy and government operations go hand in hand.

Ok lets see if you already had haz mat the TWIC would only be 29.95 ok yes it expensive to do the BGC like 130 bucks but keep in mind passports can still be falsified but what you get with the TWIC is a microchip which means easy in easy out of any port or gov facility with the volume of cargo moving thru the ports there is no way customs could check passports its convenience man. Plus its waaay more difficult to falsify a microchip than a passport yes? Let me get a thanks if you agree with me....

Nothing in the regs about "making sense" or "driver will agree." TWIC comes from a bureaucracy and they run on procedure and checklists. You either check all of the boxes on some list, hey at least they tell you most of the requirements, or you don't. You might as well argue with a Coke machine after you put postage stamps in the slot rather than paper money. The machine wants what it wants and you either make the machine happy or you go somewhere else.

If your boss required you to get BOLs signed by the receiver and the receiver argued that he thinks it makes more sense that he email "I got your freight" instead of signing the BOL, it ain't gonna work.

I have the new style passport that has a microchip in it. I guess not guaranteeing your privacy doesn't mean much to you. Just pay and pay and what me worry! No thanks forthcoming. You can keep your ignorance and your TWIT card.

I don't see why they can't have just one card one back ground check for all, both the twic and hazmat are done at the same office different doors, both by tsa. The biggest difference is the twic is a photocopy of your finger prints and the hazmat they roll your fingers to get the print. I am still saving up for a passport I don't care to leave the country any time soon.

I'm with you, gave up my hazmat for the same reason.

Uncle Slam is in the business of collecting information for the one and only purpose of giving Federal Employees something to do. That goes for the civilian contractors they hire to collect and maintain information, too. The different departments often don't even interact and are incapable of sharing information.

So you end up with countless government contractors and agencies that each need your whole life history, in minute detail, for no reason whatsoever except to employ Government employees and contractors.

Obama's jobs creation plan. And if you want to make a living with a TWIC card or Hazmat endorsement, you will do so on your knees after supplying Uncle Slam your life story- after paying him to give you his approval.

    No, Thank You.

Im glad you guys are giving up your twic and hazmat as it just means more money for me. BTW I make 500 bucks every trip in to pick up a load for a non twic driver. Canada legal, hazmat and twic loads are where some #### good money is. I have hauled 4.00 a mile loads into canada and better.

Ride on brother. I have haz mat and TWIC as well. Anything you can do to make yourself more desirable makes you cash. One trip pays for both. I have been working in Afghanistan and they could care less about my TWIC and HazMat background checks. The Army does theirs . The company does theirs. And every other company you may switch to will do another one. Check away. Just keep handing me the long green. Got nothing to hide. Or they won't find it if I do. :biggrin_2559:
