I just changed trucks from a f350 to a f550 and we have a apportioned plate on it. When I move from job to job I pull a trailer with my mini excavator and skidsteer on it, and I keep a log when I move. Then when I get to the new job I drive the truck to and from the motel. Do I have to keep driving time seperate from on-duty time or can I go on-duty till I hook back up to trailer. And since the truck is plated for 50k do you have to have a cdl to drive it? I have a Class A but I was wondering about my crew if they can drive while not pulling a trailer?

Yeah we are interstate. Our fleet manager is not sure about how I should do my log for example: when I leave the job and go to town for lunch and it only takes me 2 minutes to get there, how do I do that?

If your GVWR is over 10,001 lbs, you need a DOT medical card. If the GVWR is over 26,001, then a CDL is needed. GVWR can mean the registered weight. So as is, everyone needs a CDL. If the trailer is under 10,000, then you need a Class B. Over 10,000, then a Class A.
I would go to a scale at a truck stop and get your loaded weight. If you are under 26,000, you might want to considered getting different tags.

When he is at the job site, he is a local driver to the area and subject to the 100 mile rule and the daily work hours like a local driver. No log needed, but is advisable showing on duty not driving and the hours per day.

When I am pulling the trailer I weight 43000lbs, we have 50000lbs apportioned plate. As far as Home Base goes, I was told by a South Dakota DOT my home base is the hotel I am staying at and my main office is Waverly NE. I have been in arguements with our fleet manager about the 100 mile rule and he does not want to accept that, he want's me to do the log book like I am a OTR driver. With this new F550 he say's if I even go to the store on my day of I will have to record that as driving. But I think he is wrong on that also. Where I used to work, and we were local, they have gravel trains etc. and they never kept log books. If I worked 80hrs on the dozer they drove for 80hrs hauling dirt and we had no problems with DOT. So I think the situation I am in now is the same thing. The only thing I think I should have to do is a 7 day prior and make sure I have hours available to drive to the next job if over 100 miles from previous job. I think I am correct on this but that is why I am asking. I also think my fleet manager is making more paper work than needed for me.
