U.S. Transportation Secretary LaHood Announces Final Rule That Bans Hand-Held Cell Phone Use by Drivers of Buses and Large Trucks

Today's Action is the Latest by the Department to End Distracted Driving

WASHINGTON - U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood today announced a final rule specifically prohibiting interstate truck and bus drivers from using hand-held cell phones while operating their vehicles. The joint rule from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) is the latest action by the U.S. Department of Transportation to end distracted driving.

"When drivers of large trucks, buses and hazardous materials take their eyes off the road for even a few seconds, the outcome can be deadly," said Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. "I hope that this rule will save lives by helping commercial drivers stay laser-focused on safety at all times while behind the wheel.

Law Enforcement is exempt from anything. They can pull their weapon to protect themselves, they can spray people in the face with pepper spray for no sitting peacefully and harass the hell out of anyone they choose. You try and pull a weapon to protect yourself, you will end up in the slammer.

Before all you guys jump on me about being liberal, I am not. I am very conservative and think that government has gone too far and try and control the sheeple anyway they can. I am not a fan of the current politicians, police or CEO's. I am a fan of the military, average Joe's, Apple Pie, God and Country. My fellow Americans are good! Cops, Government, Lawyers and CEO's are not good....

I guess what really gets my goat is they quote accident statistics that include all vehicles (which of course they never mention over 2/3 of all accidents don't involve a truck, and of that remaining portion another 2/3 or more are the fault of the car driver) but the rule only applies to truck and bus drivers.

The word "handheld" is mentioned throughout. I can understand that. It is my assumption that a bluetooth headset or handsfree headset would be allowed.

I don't see a problem with this rule. I can almost guarantee you that when I see a truck weaving all over the highway, the driver has a phone held up to his ear.
    Use a bluetooth device.
