    Hello folks,

I am in need of help. I live in Alabama and want to open a small trucking company (maybe more of a courier type deal). I will be driving a cube van type truck with a GVWR of exactly 10000 LBS. I will be carrying loads of no more than 3000 LBS most between 1000 and 2500 It is my understanding that with that kind of vehicle I do not have to log, hit the scales (in most states) or carry a DOT medical card. I am understanding that I need to get my own authority to operate in other states than Alabama. Does any of the requirements change since the vehicle only the weight listed above? I thought I had read somewhere you only had to pay fuel taxes on cdl vehicles. Also if I operated totally in Alabama would I need any authority at all? I would welcome any help I could get, thank you all in advance for your help and input.

I asked Diesel Bear about this, as I have a CDL. In my situation I am hauling a antique tractor to fairgrounds for show. As long as you are for "hire" you fall under the commercial application. You will need to prove if you are pulled over that you are not for hire and it will make you exempt.

Ok thank you. I guess in my situation I would be for hire then.

How about this senario; let's say I have a farm and have some animal waste that I sell and deliver. What type of plates do I need. Can I just use farm plates since this is my product that? What if I buy Manure from other farmers and then I sell it?

My scenario is not on what plates you run, but whether or not you are required by law to have logs and meet commercial inspections. I run personal vehicle on my pickup and trailer.

My point is that if you do it for hire, we are required to log, and are expected to go into an open scale house.

I would not be doing anything for hire, I would just be selling the manure that I have on my farm plus any that I buy.

Farm stuff usually falls under something completely different... at least it does in the upper midwest.

There are tons of things that farmers are exempt from up here, including some weight restrictions.

Even going across some local state lines is ok because they have reciprocity with the neighboring state.

Of course, you wouldn't get away with going 3 or 4 states away with this stuff.

I suggest talking to some local farmers that have trucks and see what they say.

    lovesthedrive Thanks this.

The locals are all hauling with just farm tags and insurance. I just wanted to make sure that if it comes off of another farm that I would still be considered farm use. I would be selling the manure that I bought from another farm and delivering it.
