    Pretty much. I know several that have cdl's from when they drove in the 80's but kept them. Which makes no sense in our state. Cdl cost 60, normal license, 10.

    How could they have CDL's from driving in the 80's? The CDL became required in April of 1992. I grandfathered into the CDL from the old chauffeur's license, but still had to take all the written tests for all the certifications like anyone else. I understand the confusion, but if they haven't driven commercially since the 80's, they never had a CDL.

    What did you have to do to get your cdl back again?

    If you have a state such as NC that does Self-Certification they have different categories you can chose from.

    I run Restriction K, - Intrastate/No Med Card, but retain my CDL-A license. To remove the restriction I just have to get a current physical, re-self certify and mark Interstate again.

    You have to check with your States DMV... easiest way is to Google Self-Certify (your state).

    Always if your state does Self-Certification, take the Med forms to your local DMV and self-certify.

    In VA I kept my class B cdl for almost 10 years without using it and without a med card. Just checked no medical card not using license at current job at the DMV when renewing it. Not sure if that option exists for class A. Made it easier to get class A permit at least. I didn't have to take any tests other than the combination vehicle

    @Mark Kling

    I think what you posted is a nation wide thing. That's the way it works in Utah also. I'm guessing all 48 states amyways.

    Pretty much. CA/AZ require you to hold a valid Med Cert when other states can self-certify and run themselves Intra and do not hold a valid Med Cert, but retain their CDL. It is up to each state but what is common all states are mandated that you must submit your Med Cert to your local DMV to be in the national DB.

    A reason to let it go if you think you're not going to drive anymore is no more medical stuff and it's easier to get out of tickets when you have a class c vs class a... That way you can drive down the highway without worrying about the Glorified state revenue collectors. Gotta pay for those fancy LEDs lol
