New hoops for your medical examiner to jump thru.

Sounds like yet another money making scam. Like when you give money to Lockheed - Marten for a TWIC card.
Where will MEs go to take the test?
The test will be offered by private sector test delivery organizations throughout the United
States. FMCSA will post contact information for testing organizations on the National Registry
web site. In addition, testing organizations may administer the test online with remote
monitoring.

this is being enacted for one simple reason. i went to one of the doc in a box operations and all they did was make me pee in a cup and read the eye chart. that was it. med certificate passed and i was off to get my cdl permit. in tennessee, a chiropractor can issue a CMV driver a DOT med certificate. now you wonder why they (FMSCA) is stepping in and doing this.
and what happens if you fail? you drive a day or two without a card and go to another doc in a box and get a card. this will soon stop as well. it is all going to be in a database and they will know when you fail a checkup. get with the program drivers, the regulations are being tightened up more each day.
it is all about getting the unqualified drivers off the road. i have seen some that couldnt get in the truck with a front end loader. and they are out there driving around your families and loved ones. i know a guy who drives now for another company that has open sores on his legs from diabetes and he still manages to get a med card. and you want to call it a scam.
to each his own i guess.

How new is this, I did a search, no docs' in 500 mile radius of me.
Just renewed mine for 2 years a couple weeks back. In and out under 35 minutes. I would think a doctor with 8 years or more of training is more then qualified to give a physical. In 8 years of driving, I have only been asked for my med card 3 times. Drove with an expired one for almost 3 years, didn't renew it that time until 1 of the drivers in the company got nailed for driving with out. Figured $85 to see the doc was cheaper then $189 ticket for driving with out it.
The only thing I see coming out of this, is the $85 checkup, is going to become $150+ checkup.
