    Ok I have a dilema

I have been discussing this with my boss and he nor I can come to terms with this.

First, we run 70 hours in a 8 day logs.

As it says in the log book recaps

    1. On Duty hours today (total lines 3 & 4)

    2. A. Total hours on-duty last 7 days including today. (This is line A in the recaps)

    3. B. Total hours available tomorrow (70 hours minus Line A)

    4. C. Total hours on-duty last 8 days including today

Ok what they are asking me to do is take the total hours from 7 days which includes today and subtract that from 70 hours. Fine I can do that and get the answer. Ok here's my problem!

Let's say I added my hours and total available hours for tomorrow is 7.75 hours

Ok tomorrow comes and I actually worked 10 hours but when you add the recaps again for today I actually have good hours and not in the red by 2.25 hours.

This is where my problem is. I know the 8th day gets dropped off and that is where the problem is on these calculations, but according to the rules I am ok with hours even though I went over 2.25 hours but since the 8th day got dropped I now have 5.75 hours available for the next day. I'm sorry but this doesn't make sense to me.

I will graph the hours to let you see what I'm talking about. The hours shown will be an actual driver's hours and he also works in the yard moving vehicles.

Look at the hours available tomorrow and also look at the hours worked for the next day.

Yes I know this guy is over his hours I don't need to be schooled on him being over hours I need to know why dot is having us calculate the hours in this manner. If it were me I would calculate the 8th day and subract that from the 70 hours.

dude, on 6/4 you could only work 8.75 hours and you worked 10.5 going over the 70 in 8 days by 1.75, you had no hours on 6/5 you are 13.5 over . the way you have been told to calculate is correct. you just aint doing what the calculation says. on 6/4 you could only work 8.75, why did you work 10.5????

when you calculate the 7 days and subtract from 70 and it says you can work 7.75 you can only work 7.75 NOT 10, you appprently calculate right then ignore the calculation.

Note, you are only restricted from driving if you exceed 11 hours of driving a day, 14 hours total on duty a day, or 70 hours total on duty in 8 days. You are not restricted from being on duty, ie shuttling trailers in the yard, but you are restricted from driving a cmv on a public road, until your hours get below those limits.
By the hours shown, on his chart, he was in clear violation on the last two days, when driving.

Correction, he was in clear violation on the last day in his chart 6/5. If he accomplished his 3.25 hours of driving, before hitting the 70 hour mark on 6/4, he was not in violation.

If you are working a 70 hour/8 day dispatch, forget about the column for the last seven days. It will just make things confusing.
Also, on 6/5 you show hours avail tomorrow as 6.5. Incorrect, it is 0.00. Actually, it is -13.5, but we don't use minuses, only what is available of the 70 we are allotted.

I bought the eclipse log program from DieselBoss so I don't have to worry about these types of issues. Simply log my hours as I run them, and it does the auditing for me. Plus I don't have to worry about being 'neat' about filling out the log pages - I just print them out each morning. Best $60 I've spent yet.

The 8th day drops off at midnite. Example, if you worked 10.5 hours on 6/1, as soon as 6/9 rolls around, at 12:00 AM, those 10.5 hours drop off.

    6/1 total hours 9.75 running total 9.75, hours avail tomorrow (6/2) 60.25
    6/2 total hours 4.5 running total 14.25, hours avail tomorrow (6/3) 55.75
    6/3 total hours 11.5 running total 25.75, hours avail tomorrow (6/4) 44.25
    6/4 total hours 0.0 running total 25.75, hours avail tomorrow (6/5) 44.25
    6/5 total hours 8.25 running total 34.00, hours avail tomorrow (6/6) 36.00
    6/6 total hours 9.00 running total 43.00, hours avail tomorrow (6/7) 27.00
    6/7 total hours 14.75 running total 57.75, hours avail tomorrow (6/8) 12.25
    6/8 total hours 13.00 running total 70.75, hours avail tomorrow (6/9) 9.00 (pick up 9.75 hours from 6/1 at midnite -.75 + 9.75 = 9.00)
    6/9 total hours 5.75 running total 66.75, hours avail tomorrow (6/10) 7.75 (pick up an additional 4.5 hours from 6/2 dropping off at midnite, 3.25 + 4.5 = 7.75)

This just raises more questions. It would seem like this driver hubs out of the same terminal each day. When he does operate on the road how far does he travel? Maybe you don't need to log it like that.

Still restricted to the 70 hours in 8 days for driving. Also, according to 395.1 a "Short-haul" driver, under 100 air mile radius, need not log if released within 12 hours of reporting for duty. More than 12 hours, logs are needed.

i don't know how cops and dot can interpret. cuz man, i get a headache trying to interpret some of yalls logs. LOL.

i use trucklogger. nice to do my logs in 2 minutes and not have to worry about the math. it's also nice that my 8 days of logs are read in 5 minutes when the cops ask for them.

30+ years of practice and a dollar calculator. Why's it take that long to read 8 days worth?

I just reread the Original Post. Forget about hours used in 7 days, that is for people that run a 60 hour/7 day dispatch. You stated that y'all run under the 70 hour/8 day dispatch rule, so just forget about the seven days, altogether. The only thing that counts is the number of hours in eight days. The only two questions you are concerned about are, A: how many hours do I have on-duty in the last eight days including today? and B: how many hours will I pick up when the 8th day back drops off at midnite tonight?
