    Base plates and hauling freight

    Hi guys,

We are starting a new trucking company and our operating authority is supposed to go active in a couple of days. My question involves base plates and hauling freight for hire. We are picking up the truck in Kansas but the company is based in New Jersey, so the base plates will be from NJ. I'd rather the truck haul some freight from Kansas to NJ -- and was wondering if that's possible with temporary plates? Has anyone encountered this before and are there any other solutions? This is assuming all of our other ducks are in order -- OO, insurance, etc. and the only thing missing are the NJ plates.

    Thanks, much appreciated!

if they are just in-transit plates that you got in KS, nope not legal. If you have a temporary operating permit from NJ that apportions for the states you will be running in, you'll be fine. Another option would be to get individual state and fuel permits for every state you're driving back in. Whether that is worth the hassle and cost or not is up to you. Are you picking up a trailer too?

NJ only gives a temp 'hunters permit' allowing un-laden transport. It would be possible if they title it in NJ, to get the plates b/4 you go to get the truck...
