I am looking at purchasing a truck. Stumbled on a great deal on a Pete that is just down the road from me. I have a few concerns I'm hoping someone can shed some light on. I was told by a friend that the truck had been red flagged by the dot for not meeting some chassis weight certification. I am not sure on the validity of this and neither is my friend. He said that he was told the truck has to go back to Pete to be certified and that it may have been a road tractor that was converted into a dump. It is a triaxle now not sure if it came like that... Normally I would just look at the door sticker and see what the axle ratings are but it is not there. This is what has me worried.

Like I said I have never heard of something like this before and if the sticker was there I wouldn't even be writing this. But without it should I be worried??? I thought the red flags and points stayed with the carrier, so I shouldn't have to worry about it right?

The truck looks configured properly for the weight it has at least a 16,000lbs front axle because it has a hydraulic assist ram. The rears would have to be at least 36,000 and a bare minimum for the pusher has to be 10,000. This would give me 62,000 minimum of course I need it to be 73,280 but my assumptions are bare minimums.

I guess my biggest worry is when I get stopped am I screwed because of someone elses mistake? Is there anyway I can find out what the deal is with the truck before I buy it? I really appreciate everyone's input.

I don't know nothing about this, but if in doubt, do without. If it was red flagged, I imagine it would still be in that status if it is the truck that is to blame, and that maybe why it is a great deal.

It has to have a chassis or door frame plate with GVWR and GAWR or like a strap with no tag it's rated capacity is 0.

Call your Pete Dealer and give them the VIn and they can look it up but them replacing that plate is probably going to be some money.

Just a quick update. The owner told me the truck was a glider. I don't know if that changes anything... there is a chassis weight decal on the truck but it is not the white one with all the axles weights and gvw. It is just the normal pete tag with the chassis weight

Pretty sure you need GAWR's. Never worked near a glider maybe check in the maintenance forum. Been more than a few guy's ordering them to avoid emissions regs. Maybe search for Glider in the box up there.

When the truck was built as a dump it should have been recertified by the equipment installer and issued a new tag with weights.

Crash is correct. The factory tag for a glider list it as an incomplete truck. The builder is supposed to apply their tags with the current specs they installed. How to do that at this date is a good question. The truck may have been built by an individual instead of a company, which would be the reason there is not a correct tag. You should call the DMV and see what they say about getting it legal.
