Dual logs as backup?

    Greetings ladies and gentlemen.
    I'm in training for OTR reefer/dry van hauling, and i've got a question about dual logs. I know having two sets of the same log is illegal, so I won't be doing that.
    What i'm trying to determine is the legality of having a current log on my qualcomm in the truck, and an exact duplicate on my smartphone for a personal backup (i.e. if the qualcomm goes down, the company cans me, or solar flares wipe out my satellite connection).

    Has anybody dealt with this first hand with, or as, a LEO?
    Does anybody have a solid answer, and a source?

    If authorities find out you have that log on your phone, you will be in violation. Having the backup on your phone is a second log.

    You can run ELogs and maintain your own "personal" log if you have the time and determination to do so. Don't offer anything up to LEO other than your "official" log (ELog) if they ask. Make sure you have your company provide you with a monthly log recap be emailed to you for tax purposes unless your "backup log" is very thorough and accurate. Some GPS units do a pretty good job of data logging to SD disk.

    I've used E Logs for 2 years and even when it goes down. I never see a difference in my logs. Now most of the time I hear that it goes down is when I'm driving and never goes down for long. Sometimes seems like the qualcomm doesn't want to start up and may take a few minutes to get its act together and in that case If I was in a Hurry. I would just start a paper log and if need be call safety to get them to correct anything if needed.

    When training with Werner I was required to turn when I completed my training.I did that for the last couple of weeks and they checked it against the e-log.I wrote practice log on the front of the log book.My present co.uses paper logs and check them against the qual-com. I know if you are running e-logs you are required to have a log book in the truck incase the e-log goes down.

    I just got done with phase2/finish training, and we were required to maintain dual logs (qualcomm and paper) during the whole training period. We just wrote "for training purposes only" on the paper logs. My trainer says he always maintains a duplicate paper log and writes, "for IRS purposes only" on it. He says he learned his lesson a few years ago when the IRS audited him and then he discovered that the prior company that he worked for no longer had any record of his e-logs, meaning that he could not prove how many days he had been on the road.

    Your about to create a monster that cold potentially cost you thousands of dollars. Qualcomm is quite dependable no reason to fret. If the satellite is down your in bigger trouble than a log book. Beside there is a redundance system built into qualcomm. You can retrieve your records if need.

    Your worring about details you do not need to worry about, at least just yet.
