not as of right now and according to the DOT the only reason they have not passed the law YET is because of older trucks. they are working on a retro fit system for old mechanical trucks. Qaul com can not carry that many trucks on their network. They are all reaady running sat systems and cell systems and having issues. So they predict they will pass a law requiring these systems when they design a system for mechaincal trucks and have the networks to support all the trucks on the road. could be 1 year or 20 years. hard to say...i can say for sure when they pass it i go on well fare. hell if teh goverment wants to babysit me they may as well act like mom and dad and pay for me...LMAO

The thing is though you are right I bet alot of drivers will quit trucking and on food stamps and welfare. The feds aren't thinking about the consequences of such a mandate. Companies think they have a high turn over rate now just wait for such a bs mandate like this.

One solution is to have a whole fleet of drivers who like the E-Logs.

First off, E logs is only enforcing rules we are supposed to be following anyway. If you complain about them you are admitting you drive illegally. Seconly, if you do drive legaly, it does all the math for you and saves you tons of time in paper work. When I was on paper, I'd spend time adding up all my lines at the end of the day. Since im sloppy they wouldn't add up to 24 and id need to redo it. In the morning you need to do you 70 recap which can get annoying. Elogs lets you forget about logging and lets you focus on driving. It just makes it easier. Yea you could drive a truck without power steering, but why would you? Well no power steering is one less part to brake, but the benefits outweigh the disadvantage.

When it comes to elogs, you can quickly see how much time you have left while driving. Looking this up on paper is dangerous. You can still edit everything but the drive line. Most systems still have a grace period for running around the shipper or receiver. The only disadvantage is you have to run legal.

I'v also heard EOBRs will be mandated July 2013, not 2014. Almost all the big fleets are in the process of switching now.

Will agree that they have to create a retro fit for older mechanical engines, but that's not why they're not using QualCom yet.

There's no such thing as too many users on a SatComm System, or cell system. Think about how many DishNetwork, DirectTv subscribers streaming HD movies right now. An HD movie is as large as a GB (1,000,000,000bytes roughly). The message you send ova QC is only a few bits (takes 8 bits to make a byte), or at most a couple of bytes. So they have the room for the users.

The issues they're having between the two systems are normal for communications. Cell towers can't "see" everywhere, signal is block'd by rock formations, and network congestion is unpredictable, (ever tried to call into a disaster zone to check on a loved one and get that dumb message?) SatComm can "see" pretty much everywhere, but the transmit and receiver angles become extream at higher latitudes which is why it may take a sec or two longer for it to find a signal in main vs. south florida. But then at the same time there's solar flares that interfer with SatComm (happens every year in Jun for about two or three days), heavy cloud coverage will block SatComm, along with most overhead obstacles.

Doubt many are going to go from making what they do now, to being on a fix'd income that really doesn't pan out to be much of nothing in the end. Contrary to popular belief, truck drivers have a somewhat lavish life style, they just don't notice it. Most have rather large plots of land, some have farms, animals, multiple cars, heck some got multiple families, and on top of that multiple girlfriends. Don't forget to throw in the addictions to a carton a week of cigs, plus the casino on Saturday, combined with the adult book shop on Sunday (gotta get your worship on) and most importantly, the unnecessarily powerfully CB that has an over all cost of $300 and all it really does is just hang infront of your windshield. Can't do all of that with an EBT card, and welfare.

HOS was imposed to make sure drivers were being safe on the highways by getting the necessary amount of rest to ward off fatigue, instead of driving for three days straight hyped up on pepsi and peanuts.

While i understand the theory of HOS, i also understand that it is only theory and it will not work in all situations. Elogs forces that theory onto a driver which is not safe, which in the end goes against the purpose of HOS. I will not admit to running illegally, but i'll tell you that i'm well rested while i'm out pounding the pavement in this bad arse sum beach i call Janet!!

You should buy some 2nd grade math flash cards. The math on paper logs takes very little time.

for someone, most likely. But for the drivers i know, naw, it was really planters salted peanuts and a pepsi soda.

I told a driver once that i eat skittles and drink coke to run hard at night, and he thought i was talking about extasty and that white powder.
