Here is the information on how to submit your medical card in Texas.

All commercial drivers are required to complete a Self-Certification Affidavit (CDL-7) (PDF) when applying for or renewing a Texas commercial driver license (CDL). Individuals who are required to maintain a medical variance or a U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) medical examiner’s certificate must also present a copy of the variance or certificate at the driver license office.

I have a question: I had a Colorado CDL and received my Medical Examiner's Certificate there with my Colo CDL number on the certificate. I have now relocated to Texas, giving up my Colorado CDL and obtaining a Texas CDL in its place. Is my Medical Examiner's Certificate still good in Texas though it originated in Colorado and has my Colorado CDL number on it?

Secondly, are a DOT Card and a Medical Examiner's Certificate the same document? In other words, is it two separate names for the same document?

    Thank you!

Yes the medical card is still good in another state until it expires.

Yes, it is the same document.

I am wondering if you are actually relocating to Texas completely or going there to work?

I am told that if you are going there to to work, you have to get a Texas license which I understand goes against the Fed's rules of recognizing another state's CDL.

I have relocated to Texas completely, Ridgeline. I have physically moved to Texas now having a residence here, my car has Texas license plates and I have insurance through a Farmers agent here, not to mention having a Texas Class A CDL with Tanker and Haz endorsements I've earned here. I've officially been a Texas resident since May.

Thanks, I was down in Texas a bit ago and told by almost every potential employer I talked to that I would have to have my license changed from Michigan to Texas, take my hazmat endorsement test over and register my pu truck in Texas, I refuse to do so because everything else is here in Michigan and I am not going through the hassle of changing anything.

I see. It looks like you are already a 17 year trucker and hopefully employed in the field. I'm a newb and desire to haul tanks. As long as I'm going to be working all these hours that truckers do, I decided I wanted to be paid as much per hour as possible. As far as I can figure, that's hauling haz tanks. No company in Colorado would train me so I was willing to officially relocate to Texas to make this happen. I'm in the process of jumping through one more hoop... That's my story and I'll stick with it! :)

What concerns me about the medical card being tied to the CDL is this:

What if DPS does not update your information? Your CDL is automatically downgraded to a class C license.

At that point, you have to go through all the CDL testing again to get your CDL back. It will not be reinstated.

When you submit your updated medical card to DPS, it is then up to a DPS employee to update that information.

Human error is bound to happen. I can see some real headaches with this new requirement.

MN gives the submittor a receipt. Does TX not do the same?

In Tx, you can update several different ways.

    1. Go in person to Tx DPS location, which in Houston is usually a 2 hour wait.

    2. Mail.

    3. Fax.

    4. Scan and email (PDF format only).

Tx DPS sends a notification letter when medical card is coming due.

They do not give a receipt, or confirmation that updated information was received. I think they should, as it would avoid future problems.

I just submitted my updated medical form yesterday. I emailed, and faxed it to them. I printed out the sent email (with attachments) just to have something of a receipt.

I know of no way to get an acknowledgement of receipt, other than to maybe send it as a certified letter.
