The state of Virginia does the same thing now - you go in to make changes to your license, etc. and they punch out "VOID" on your old license, issue a paper license with your new information on it and then mail you your new hard license (takes @ 1-2 weeks). You're told at DMV to carry both the paper license & the "VOIDED" license in case you are stopped.

I'm wondering if what your safety director is telling you is based on your company's policy? Have you checked your employee handbook or asked your safety guy if what he's telling you is company policy? Insurance companies are very stringent when it comes to the carrier industry and this might be a restriction set-forth by them.

In other words a temporary license till your your hard copy arrives. I drove with the paper temp, but not with that state - med card needs to be up to date then be sure to have your hard copy in possession before the paper temp expires, meaning get by the house or mailing address and pick it up when it arrives.. Can't drive? news to me... I guess, check your state law rules/regs.

when I moved to another state, the dmv there took my license, its called "surrendering".. then issued the paper. previous state punched a whole in the old one but the renewal was in the same state. They said 4 to 6 weeks till hard copy arrives, got there in 3. the new state arrived in 2 weeks... temps were valid for 6 weeks

I drove with my temporary 20 day paper permit while the card was being processed and mailed when I first got my CDL. I also carry my passport and TWIC for photo ID purposes.

I never had a problem driving with a paper temporary from CO. Do make sure you get your hardcopy or another temp before the one you have expires.
