Is a caged brake chamber a violation of the FMCSR's? If so, why?

Caging a brake disables it, hence the violation.

Caged brake chamber only for towtruck use. I guess you could cage it to get to the nearest shop as long as there is no scales. I would surely say oos if u get inspected and running that way.

OOS depending on the number of brakes in violation. The rule is 20%, so one brake out of 10 is not OOS. Still a violation, but not OOS.

RAGE 18 and Ranger Bob Thank this.

Caging only disables the spring brake or parking brake so you still have that service brake working

    Agreed.

You are not required to have an emergency brake on every chamber and the service side IS working. So the brake is not inoperative.

I'm not asking if it's OOS. I'm only asking- is it a brake violation under the Federal Regs?

A violation is a violation. It doesn't matter if you are "heading to the shop to get it fixed."

Yes its a violation. Maybe more than one depending on why you have it caged,

I'm not agreeing or disagreeing here. But I'm looking for the regulation that is violated in the FMCSR's.

Why and how do you "cage" a brake chamber?
