The problem is drivers don't know any better so they allow it. Me personally when I have been awaken by DOT in rest areas in Ohio I politely tell them to sign my log book stating they interrupted my mandated 10 hour break before I move to the front of my truck. I have yet to be inspected while parked in a rest area.

I even told a couple of them they are more than willing to come back in 7 hours as my sleeper break would then be over. They say I better be gone before they get back and both times I was already down the road. Just because they say they want to inspect you while on your 10hr doesn't mean you have to allow them too.

While it may suck and may screw a driver over, it is not illegal. It is legal to be on duty after 14 hrs. You just aren't supposed to drive after 14 hrs. After your inspection you would just have to restart your 10 hr break to be in compliance when you do get to resume driving. Yep, it would not be good....but is still legal.

i chewed a young dot boy out one night about 8yrs ago for doing just that. two hrs after going to bed there was a loud knock on my door. grumpy as i was i jumped in the drivers seat and rolled down the window yelling my truck better be on fire or some kind of emergency before i realized it was a dot officer. he gave me a look like he didnt want to be there right then. he muttered something about wrong truck and walked off. i didnt let on it scared me also. couldnt sleep a wink after that.

I dont know if its illegal or not, but I sure aint gonna answer the door and find out, cause im in the sleeper and Im not coming out and get harrased by that kind of insane stupidity. They want to check me they are gonna have to wait till I get behind the wheel and go on duty.

I'm not going to state if it is illegal, or not. However, I do know the Feds frown upon such practices and will chew on the state's officials, in charge, for allowing such.

    Real simple............don't answer the door.

Just like Jehovahs..........they won't wait very long before they head to the next door.
